Exhaust Drone While Vehicle Is Idling And In Gear

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 3.9L ENGINE AND AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Exhaust drone while vehicle is idling in gear.

DIAGNOSIS:

Start the vehicle and warm the engine until it reaches normal operating temperatures. Apply the service brake and move the transmission gear selector to either D or R and listen for an exhaust drone. If the vehicle has an exhaust drone with the engine idling and the transmission in D or R, perform the following Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves removing the catalytic converter hanger.

WARNING:
THE FOLLOWING REPAIR SHOULD ONLY BE MADE AFTER THE EXHAUST SYSTEM IS ALLOWED TO COOL.

1. Raise the vehicle on an appropriate lift.





2. Use a suitable tool (high speed cut-off wheel, etc.) to cut off the catalytic converter hanger (Figure 1). The hanger should be cut as close to the exhaust pipe as possible without causing damage to the exhaust pipe. Then, remove the hanger from the grommet.

3. With a grinder, dress the rough edges on the exhaust pipe where the hanger was removed.

4. Lower the vehicle.
