Recall - VECI Label Replacement: Overview

No. 7842

June, 1998

To: All Dodge Truck Dealers

Subject:
Emissions Recalls # 7841 and # 7842 -- VECI Label Replacement

Models:
1998 Model Year Dodge Ram Van and Wagon (AB) Vehicles Built Through February 20, 1998 (MDH 022008) Equipped With a 5.2L Engine ("Y" in the 8th VIN Position), and a California Emission Control System (Sales Code -- NAE):

^ Recall # 7841 -- 1500 Van/Wagon With a 109" Wheel Base (W.B.), 1500 Van With a 127" W.B. and 1500 Conversion Van with a 109" W.B. or 127" W.B.

^ Recall # 7842 -- 1500 Maxi-Van With a 127" W.B., 2500 Van/Wagon With a 127" W.B., 2500 Maxi-Van With a 127" W.B. and 2500 Conversion Van with a 127" W.B.

The wrong Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) label may have been installed on about 1,000 of the above listed vehicles. As a result, the wrong label will cause the vehicle to fail an emissions test. To correct this condition, a new VECI label must be installed.

Replacement labels are being mailed directly to owners. The owners are requested to install the labels themselves or, if preferred, to arrange for dealer installation of the owner-supplied label without charge.

Dealer Notification & Vehicle List

All dealers will receive a copy of this dealer recall notification letter by first class mail. Each dealer to whom involved vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same street address) will receive a list of their involved vehicles. The Vehicle List is arranged in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of involved vehicles.

DIAL System Functions 53 and VIP

All involved vehicles will be entered to DIAL System Functions 53 and VIP at the time of recall implementation for dealer inquiry as needed.

Function 53 provides involved dealers with an updated VIN list of incomplete vehicles. The customer name, address and phone number is listed if known. Parts information is also provided. Complete vehicles are removed from Function 53 within several days of repair claim submission. To use this system, type "53" at the "ENTER FUNCTION" prompt, then type "ORD7841" or "ORD7842".

Parts

VECI labels are being mailed to all owners known to Chrysler with the Owner Notification letter.

Each involved dealer to whom vehicles in the recall were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same street address), will receive enough labels (included with the vehicle list) to service 100% of unsold vehicles according to our records.

If an owner's label is lost, or if dealers require more labels for inventory vehicles, additional VECI labels may be ordered as needed to support customer demand. The appropriate label for the vehicle to be serviced may be determined by:

^ Using the VIN and part number list electronically transmitted to DIAL System Function 53 (involved dealers) or

^ Entering the VIN to DIAL System Function VIP (to determine involved recall number) along with the table shown (all dealers).

Owner Notification and Service Scheduling

All involved vehicle owners known to Chrysler are being notified of the service requirement by first class mail. They are requested to install the supplied VECI label over the incorrect label on their vehicle. Any owner who prefers not to install the label is asked to schedule an appointment for the service with their dealer. A copy of the owner notification letter is included.

Enclosed with each owner notification is an Owner Notification Form. The involved vehicle and recall are identified on the form for owner or dealer reference as needed.

Service Procedure

Upon owner request, apply the VECI label as follows:

1. Raise the hood and locate the VECI label on the underside of the hood.

2. Clean the surface of the existing label and apply the owner-supplied label directly over it, covering the original label.

Completion Reporting and Reimbursement

Claims for vehicles which have been serviced must be submitted on the DIAL System. Claims submitted will be used by Chrysler to record recall service completions and provide dealer payments.
