Recall - Daytime Running Lamp Labels: Overview

May 1999

Safety Recall No. 829

Daytime Running Lamp Labels

Models

1999 (NS) Dodge Caravan/Grand Caravan and Plymouth Voyager/Grand Voyager

NOTE:
This recall applies only to the above vehicles equipped with daytime running lamps (Sales Code LMN - Fleet option only) built at the:

St. Louis South Assembly Plant ("B " in the 11th VIN position) through December 4, 1998 (MDH 120401);

Windsor Assembly Plant ("R" in the 11th VIN position) through December 11, 1998 (MDH 121114).

IMPORTANT:
Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer new vehicle inventory. Federal law requires you to complete this recall service on these vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also consider this requirement to apply to used vehicle inventory and should perform this recall on vehicles in for service as determined by using the DIAL VIP System.

Subject
About 1,600 of the above vehicles use the turn signal bulbs for Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) and do not have the lenses marked "DRL". This identification is required by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108 - Lamps, Reflective Devices and Associated Equipment.

Repair

DRL labels must be installed on both headlamp module lenses.

DRL labels are being mailed directly to all vehicle owners known to DaimlerChrysler with the Owner Notification letter. The owners are requested to install the labels themselves or, if preferred, to arrange for dealer installation of the owner-supplied labels without charge.

Parts Information

Each involved dealer to whom vehicles in the recall were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same street address) will receive enough labels (included with the vehicle list) to service 100% of unsold vehicles according to our records.

If an owner's labels are lost or if dealers require more labels for inventory vehicles, additional DRL labels, PN 00048570AA, may be ordered as needed to support customer demand.

Completion Reporting and Reimbursement

Claims for vehicles that have been serviced must be submitted on the DIAL System. Claims submitted will be used by DaimlerChrysler to record recall service completions and provide dealer payments.

Use the following labor operation number and time allowance:

Dealer Notification and Vehicle List

All dealers will receive a copy of this dealer recall notification letter by first class mail. Two additional copies will be sent through the DCMMS and the "TIL" will be updated to include this recall in the near future. Each dealer to whom involved vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same street address) will receive a list of their involved vehicles. The vehicle list is arranged in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to DaimlerChrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of involved vehicles.

DIAL Svstem Functions 53 and VIP

All involved vehicles will be entered to DIAL System Functions 53 and VIP at the time of recall implementation for dealer inquiry as needed.

Function 53 provides involved dealers with an updated VIN list of their incomplete vehicles. The customer name, address and phone number are listed if known. Completed vehicles are removed from Function 53 within several days of repair claim submission. To use this system, type "53" at the "ENTER FUNCTION" prompt, then type "ORD829".

Owner Notification and Service Scheduling

All involved vehicle owners known to DaimlerChrysler are being notified of the service requirement by first class mail. They are requested to install the supplied DRL labels on their vehicle. Any owner who prefers not to install the labels is asked to schedule an appointment for the service with their dealer. A copy of the owner notification letter is included.

Enclosed with each owner notification is an Owner Notification Form. The involved vehicle and recall are identified on the form for owner or dealer reference as needed.
