THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN NUMBER 08-16-99, DATED MAY 28, 1999, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. THIS BULLETIN REVISES AN INCORRECT LABOR OPERATION NUMBER. THE CHANGES ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS**.
SUBJECT:
Inoperative or Intermittent Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves replacing the RKE transmitter case.
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO MARCH 1, 1999 (MDH 0301XX). IT APPLIES ONLY TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE NEW PEANUT SHAPED TRANSMITTERS. SOME EARLY BUILT 1999 NS TOWN & COUNTRY MODELS WERE EQUIPPED WITH THE SQUARE SHAPED TRANSMITTERS.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Inoperative RKE transmitter. This condition may be intermittent and will have similar symptoms to a dead transmitter battery. This can be caused by a lost or intermittent contact between the battery terminal and the printed circuit board. A transmitter repair kit containing a new case with an improved battery terminal has been released.
DIAGNOSIS:
If the vehicle exhibits this condition, perform the Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
THIS REPAIR IS COMPATIBLE WITH DAIMLERCHRYSLER'S MOBILE SERVICE PROGRAM AND DOES NOT REQUIRE HOISTS OR OTHER FULL SERVICE FACILITY SPECIAL EQUIPMENT.
1. Using a small coin or appropriate tool, pry open the transmitter.
CAUTION:
USE CARE WHEN HANDLING THE TRANSMITTER PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD. AVOID TOUCHING THE CIRCUITS ON THE PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD. A DISCHARGE OF STATIC ELECTRICITY CAN RENDER THE TRANSMITTER INOPERATIVE. IF THE BOARD MUST BE HANDLED, USE ONLY THE EDGES OF THE CIRCUIT BOARD.
2. Place the top half of the transmitter, containing the switches, on a clean, flat surface. Depress one or more of the switch buttons to dislodge the switch/circuit board assembly from the case. Use caution not to touch any of the printed circuits on the circuit board.
3. Install the switch/circuit board into the new case and snap the case halves together.
NOTE:
RE-PROGRAMMING OF THE TRANSMITTERS IS NOT REQUIRED USING THIS PROCEDURE. VEHICLES UTILIZES ROLLING CODES MAY LOOSE SYNCHRONIZATION. IF THIS OCCURS, DEPRESS THE UNLOCK BUTTON SEVEN CONSECUTIVE TIMES TO RESET THIS FEATURE.
4. Verify transmitter operation by depressing the unlock button. Vehicles equipped with rolling codes may require depressing the unlock button seven consecutive times to synchronize the rolling codes.
5. Transfer the keys to the new ring.
