Upper A-Pillar Area - Wind Noise
NO: 23-42-98GROUP: Body
DATE: Sep. 11, 1998
SUBJECT:
Windnoise At Upper A-Pillar Area
MODELS:
1998 - 1999 (AB) Ram Van/Wagon
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1, 1998 (MDH 0901XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Hiss or whistle type windnoise can be heard coming from the A-pillar area (either driver and/or passenger sides) while driving at speeds of 30 mph (48 Kph) or greater. The noise can be heard at lower speeds if the vehicle is driven into a headwind. The source of the noise may be confused with an air leak caused by a windshield urethane bead skip.
DIAGNOSIS:
Road test the vehicle at speeds of 30 mph (48 Kph) or greater. If a hiss or whistle type noise is heard coming from the A-pillar area (either driver and/or passenger sides), carefully inspect the end of the drip rails for small sealer skips or gaps (Figure 1). Gaps as small as 0.5 mm (0.020 in.) can produce this type of noise. Use of an inspection light and a magnifying glass can be useful to aid in diagnosis. If sealer skips or gaps are found, perform the Repair Procedure. If no skips or gaps are found, further diagnosis will be necessary.
PARTS REQUIRED:
AR (1) 04318026 Sealer, Paintable Repair
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves repairing skips or gaps in the ends of the drip rails.
1. Clean the area to be sealed with soap and water then, throughly dry the area.
2. Seal all skips and gaps with Mopar Paintable Repair Sealer p/n 04318026. The sealer is clear and for most areas will not require painting. If it has been determined that the repair area needs to be painted, touch-up the sealed area with touch-up paint. The sealer dries tack-tree and can be painted in 30 minutes.
3. Perform a road test to verify the repair. Further diagnosis will be required if aspiration noise can still be heard coming from the A-pillar area.
