WARNING: ALTHOUGH FACTORY INSTALLED BRAKE LINING USED ON THE VIPER IS MADE FROM ASBESTOS FREE MATERIALS, SOME AFTERMARKET BRAKE LINING MAY CONTAIN ASBESTOS. THIS SHOULD BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT WHEN SERVICING A VEHICLE'S BRAKE SYSTEM, WHEN AFTERMARKET BRAKE LININGS MAY HAVE BEEN INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLE. ALWAYS WEAR A RESPIRATOR WHEN CLEANING BRAKE COMPONENTS AS ASBESTOS CAN CAUSE SERIOUS BODILY HARM SUCH AS ASBESTOSIS AND OR CANCER. NEVER CLEAN BRAKE COMPONENTS BY USING COMPRESSED AIR, USE ONLY A VACUUM CLEANER SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR THE REMOVAL OF BRAKE DUST. IF A VACUUM CLEANER IS NOT AVAILABLE, CLEAN BRAKE PARTS USING ONLY WATER DAMPENED SHOP TOWELS. DO NOT CREATE BRAKE LINING DUST BY SANDING BRAKE LININGS WHEN SERVICING A VEHICLE. DISPOSE OF ALL DUST AND DIRT SUSPECTED OF CONTAINING ASBESTOS FIBERS USING ONLY SEALED AIRTIGHT BAGS OR CONTAINERS. FOLLOW ALL RECOMMENDED SAFETY PRACTICES PRESCRIBED BY THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION (OSHA) AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA), FOR HANDLING AND DISPOSAL OF PRODUCTS CONTAINING ASBESTOS.

Brake Pedal Positioning Tool Installed:

1. Using a brake pedal positioning tool such as shown depress the brake pedal down past the first 1 inch of travel. This will isolate the master cylinder reservoir from the brake hydraulic system and will not allow brake hydraulic fluid to drain out of reservoir.
2. Raise vehicle on jackstands or centered on a hoist.
3. Remove front wheel and tire assemblies.

Brake Flex Hose Attachment:

4. Remove the front hub/bearing mounting bolt attaching the brake flex hose bracket to the steering knuckle.

Brake Flex Hose Attachment To Caliper:

5. Remove the brake flex hose to caliper banjo bolt. Remove the brake flex hose, banjo bolt and seal washers from the caliper.

6. Remove the 2 bolts attaching the disc brake caliper to the steering knuckle.
7. Remove the disc brake caliper from the vehicle by lifting it straight up and off the steering knuckle and rotor.

INSTALL
If the vehicle requires new front brake shoe assemblies, they can be installed in the caliper assembly before or after the caliper is installed on the vehicle.

The procedure is the same if the caliper is on or off the vehicle. If brake shoe assemblies are installed in caliper before caliper is installed on vehicle, caliper pistons must be fully seated into caliper bores for installing caliper assembly over braking disc. Caliper pistons can be pushed back into bores using your fingers and squarely pushing on face of pistons.

1. Install the disc brake caliper by carefully sliding it down over the rotor. Be carefully so that the brake shoe friction material does not get damaged when installing the caliper.
2. Align the caliper mounting bosses with the threaded holes in the steering knuckle. Install the 2 mounting bolts for the caliper into steering knuckle. Tighten the caliper to steering knuckle attaching bolts to a torque of 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.).

CAUTION: When the brake flex hose is installed on the caliper, NEW copper seal washers MUST be used between the banjo bolt and flex hose and flex hose and caliper.

3. Install the brake flex hose back on the calipers assembly using the following procedure.
^ Install the flex hose, banjo bolt and NEW copper seal washers onto the caliper assembly first. Only hand tighten the flex hose to caliper assembly banjo bolt do not torque.
^ Align the flex hose mounting bracket with the steering knuckle hole. Install the hub/bearing to steering knuckle attaching bolt. Tighten the hub/bearing to steering knuckle attaching bolt to a torque of 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). Then tighten the flex hose to caliper banjo bolt to a torque of 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.).

4. Remove the brake pedal positioning tool.
5. If the brake shoes need to be installed in the caliper, do the brake shoe installation at this time.
6. Bleed both front brake calipers. See Brake Bleeding for the required bleeding procedure.
7. Install the wheel and tire assemblies. Tighten the wheel mounting stud nuts in proper sequence until all nuts are torqued to half specification. Then repeat the tightening sequence to the full specified torque of 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.).
8. Remove jackstands or lower hoist. Before moving vehicle, pump the brake pedal several times to insure the vehicle has a firm brake pedal to adequately stop vehicle.
9. Road test the vehicle and make several stops to wear off any foreign material on the brakes and to seat the brake shoe linings. See Brake Burnish Procedure in Service and Repair for the correct procedure if NEW brake shoe assemblies were installed.
