For replacement of the upper control arm isolator bushings, the upper control arm must be removed from the vehicle.DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.
CAUTION: The jaws of the vise must be covered with protective caps to protect the surface of the control arm from damage.
2. Clamp the upper control arm securely in a vise.
3. Remove the nut and washer from each end of the upper control arm pivot bar.
4. Install Remover, Special Tool 6969-5, in the mounting hole of the upper control arm pivot bar. Special Tool 6969-5 is to be installed with the counterbore facing up. This will prevent the pin from falling out of the tool during bushing removal. Install Nut, Special Tool 6969-4, on the end of the upper control arm pivot bar.
5. Assemble Remover, Special Tool 6969-2, bolt, nut and thrust washer as shown.
Tools Installed For Removal Of First Bushing:
6. Install the assembled pieces of Remover, Special Tool 6969-2, on the upper control arm. Tool is installed on control arm by threading bolt of Remover, Special Tool 6969-2, into the Nut, Special Tool 6969-4 installed on end of pivot bar.
7. Isolator bushing is removed from control arm using the following procedure. Hold the bolt of Remover, Special Tool 6969-2, from turning while rotating the nut. This will pull the pivot bar and the isolator bushing out of the upper control arm at the same time.
8. Transfer Remover, Special Tool 6969-5 and Nut, Special Tool 6969-4 to the other end of the pivot bar.
Tools Installed For Removal Of Second Bushing:
9. Remove the second isolator bushing from control arm using the following procedure. Hold the bolt of Remover, Special Tool 6969-2, from turning while rotating the nut. This will pull the pivot bar and the second isolator bushing out of the upper control arm at the same time.
ASSEMBLY
1. Start the isolator bushing into the control arm by hand. Be sure the bushing is installed straight.
First Isolator Bushing Installation:
2. Position Installer, Special Tool C-4982-5, and Installer, Special Tool L 4422-1, on the upper control arm and isolator bushing. Special Tool C-4982-5 is correctly positioned on the control arm when the 2 bosses are seated in the counterbore on the bottom plate of Special Tool C-4982-5.
Isolator Bushing Correctly Installed:
3. Press the isolator bushing into the control arm until the flange of the bushing is squarely seated against the control arm. No gap is allowed between the flange of the isolator bushing and the control arm.
Pivot Bar Installation:
4. Install pivot bar and washer in upper control arm and isolator bushing. Pivot bar is to be installed with serrations at mounting holes facing upward.
Isolator Bushing Installed Position:
5. Install the second isolator bushing in the control arm.
Second Isolator Bushing Installation:
6. Position Installer, Special Tool C-4982-5, and Installer Special Tool L 4422-1, on the upper control arm and isolator bushing. Special Tool C-4982-5 is correctly positioned on the control arm when the 2 bosses are seated in the counterbore on the bottom plate of Special Tool C-4982-5.
7. Press the isolator bushing into the control arm until the flange of the bushing is squarely seated against the control arm. No gap is allowed between the flange of the isolator bushing and the control arm.
8. Install the nut and washer on each end of the upper control arm pivot bar. Tighten the nuts just enough to hold the pivot bar in place. Do not tighten or torque at this time. This is to be done once the arm is back on the vehicle and the vehicle is set at design height.
9. Install the upper control arm on the vehicle.
