Rear

NOTE: Before proceeding, review all SERVICE WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS found under Steering and Suspension, Suspension, Service Precautions.

REMOVAL
1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Raise vehicle. See Maintenance for the required lifting procedure.
3. Remove the wheel and tire.
4. Remove the cotter pin, nut lock, and spring washer from the axle yoke.

5. Remove the hub nut mounting the hub and bearing to the yoke.

6. Remove the washer from the yoke.
7. Release the parking brake.

8. Using a pin punch of the appropriate size, tap the brake pad retaining pin out of caliper. Remove retaining pin using pin punch until retaining pin snap ring is past outboard side of brake caliper assembly.

WARNING: HOLD ANTI-RATTLE SPRING IN PLACE WHILE REMOVING BRAKE PAD RETAINING PIN FROM CALIPER. IF ANTI-RATTLE SPRING IS NOT HELD IN PLACE DURING REMOVAL OF BRAKE PAD RETAINING PIN ANTI-RATTLE SPRING MAY FLY OFF CALIPER CAUSING POSSIBLE INJURY.

9. Pull the brake pad retaining pin out of the caliper, then remove the anti-rattle spring from the caliper. Check condition of sleeves and retaining pin*, replace if retaining pins are corroded, or sleeves are worn or damaged.

10. Slide outboard brake shoe toward rear of vehicle until the brake shoe clears the top of the caliper. Then, lift brake shoe up and out between caliper and outboard side of braking disc.

11. Slide inboard brake shoe toward rear of vehicle until the brake shoe clears the top of the caliper. Then, lift brake shoe up and out between caliper and inboard side of rotor.
12. Remove the brake rotor from the rear hub and bearing while sliding it out from rear brake caliper assembly.

13. Remove the 4 bolts attaching the hub and bearing to the knuckle.

14. Remove the hub and bearing and gasket from the knuckle and axle shaft yoke. The hub and bearing should separate from the yoke and the knuckle by pulling on it by hand. If the hub and bearing will not separate from yoke and knuckle by hand, use Puller, Special Tool CT-1003, to remove the hub and bearing.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: A corrosion prevention gasket is used between the hub and bearing and the knuckle. The gasket is required to prevent galvanic corrosion between the hub and bearing and the steering knuckle.

1. Install a new corrosion prevention gasket on the hub and bearing before installing it in the knuckle.
2. Install rear hub and bearing on yoke and rear knuckle. Align holes in hub/bearing and corrosion gasket with the holes in the knuckle.
3. Install the 4 attaching bolts for the rear hub and bearing. Tighten the hub and bearing attaching bolts to a torque of 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the hub nut washer on the yoke.
5. Install the hub nut mounting the hub and bearing to the yoke. Do not tighten the nut at this time.

NOTE: To ease installation of the rear brake shoes, the rear caliper piston should be seated into caliper piston bore before shoe installation.

6. Seat (bottom) caliper piston in the caliper bore as follows. Assemble a 3/8 drive ratchet handle and 7/16 deep-well socket, then insert Spanner, Special Tool 6366 into deep well socket. Insert lugs on face of spanner tool, into matching holes in face of caliper piston. A lot of force is required to be exerted against caliper piston while using spanner tool, to start process of caliper piston retraction.
7. Rotate caliper piston in a CLOCKWISE direction until caliper piston is fully seated (bottomed) in the caliper bore. Then remove caliper piston rotating special tool.
8. Install the brake rotor on the hub and bearing.
9. Install the inboard brake shoe into the caliper by sliding it between the rotor and the caliper.
10. Install outboard brake shoe into caliper by sliding it in between the rotor and the caliper.

WARNING: HOLD ANTI-RATTLE SPRING IN PLACE WHILE INSTALLING BRAKE PAD RETAINING PIN INTO CALIPER ASSEMBLY. IF ANTI-RATTLE SPRING IS NOT HELD IN PLACE DURING INSTALLATION OF RETAINING PIN, ANTI-RATTLE SPRING MAY FLY OFF CALIPER CAUSING POSSIBLE INJURY.

11. Install the anti-rattle spring into the brake caliper. Be sure anti-rattle clip is positioned correctly between brake shoes and caliper.
Install brake shoe retaining pin into caliper assembly from the outboard side, until small end of retaining pin is in inboard side of caliper assembly. When installing retaining pin be sure it passes through loops in anti-rattle spring.

12. Using a pin drift, drive the brake shoe retaining pin into the caliper. Be sure retaining pin is installed until retaining pin snap ring is seated in outboard side of caliper.
Lower the vehicle just enough to gain access to the interior.
13. Apply wheel brakes several times to seat brake shoes and equalize parking brake adjustment.
14. Apply the parking brake to keep axle from moving when torquing the hub nut.
15. Tighten the yoke to rear hub/bearing mounting nut to a torque of 257 Nm (190 ft. lbs.).
16. Install the spring washer, retainer, and cotter pin for the rear hub nut on the yoke.
17. Install the wheel and tire. Tighten the wheel mounting stud nuts in proper sequence until all nuts are torqued to half specification. Then repeat the tightening sequence to the full specified torque of 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.).
18. Lower the vehicle to ground level.
19. Road test vehicle making several stops to wear off any foreign material on brake shoes and or braking discs. Refer to Brakes and Traction Control, Disc Brake System Brake Pads, Brake Shoe Burnishing for the correct procedure if NEW brake shoes were installed.
