Disassembly and Reassembly

DISASSEMBLY

WARNING: DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL, STEERING COLUMN, SEAT BELT TENSIONER, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. DISCONNECT AND ISOLATE THE BATTERY NEGATIVE (GROUND) CABLE, THEN WAIT TWO MINUTES FOR THE AIRBAG SYSTEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE PERFORMING FURTHER DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. THIS IS THE ONLY SURE WAY TO DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.

1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. If either of the airbags has not been deployed, wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service.
2. Remove the passenger airbag from the instrument panel. (Refer to RESTRAINTS/PASSENGER AIRBAG - REMOVAL).

Passenger Side Airbag Door Remove/Install:

3. Place the passenger airbag on a suitable work surface. Remove the two screws that secure one of the end brackets to the passenger airbag housing and remove the end bracket.
4. Slide the passenger airbag door sideways towards the end of the airbag housing from which the end bracket was removed until the beads on the upper and lower return flanges of the airbag door clear the extruded channels at the top and the bottom of the passenger airbag housing.
5. Remove the passenger airbag door from the airbag housing.

WARNING:
- DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL, STEERING COLUMN, SEAT BELT TENSIONER, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE.
- USE EXTREME CARE TO PREVENT ANY FOREIGN MATERIAL FROM ENTERING THE PASSENGER AIRBAG, OR BECOMING ENTRAPPED BETWEEN THE PASSENGER AIRBAG CUSHION AND THE PASSENGER AIRBAG DOOR. FAILURE TO OBSERVE THIS WARNING COULD RESULT IN OCCUPANT INJURIES UPON AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT.
- THE PASSENGER AIRBAG DOOR MUST NEVER BE PAINTED. REPLACEMENT AIRBAG DOORS ARE SERVICED IN THE ORIGINAL COLORS. PAINT MAY CHANGE THE WAY IN WHICH THE MATERIAL OF THE AIRBAG DOOR RESPONDS TO AN AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT. FAILURE TO OBSERVE THIS WARNING COULD RESULT IN OCCUPANT INJURIES UPON AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT.

1. Position the passenger airbag door to the end of the passenger airbag housing with the end bracket removed.
2. Engage the beads on the upper and lower passenger airbag door return flanges into the extruded channels at the top and the bottom of the passenger airbag housing.
3. Slide the passenger airbag door sideways until the beads on the upper and lower airbag door return flanges are fully engaged in the extruded channels at the top and the bottom of the passenger airbag housing.
4. Position the end bracket to the passenger airbag housing and align the mounting holes with the extruded channels at the top and bottom of the housing.
5. Install and tighten the two screws that secure the end bracket to the passenger airbag housing. Tighten the screws to 10 Nm (90 in. lbs.).
6. Reinstall the passenger airbag into the instrument panel. (Refer to RESTRAINTS/PASSENGER AIRBAG - INSTALLATION).
