SUBJECT:
Flash: Surge, Lack of Power in 3rd Gear, and No 3/4 Upshift After 4/3 Downshift

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the JTEC Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with new software (00Cal19 and 01Cal18).

MODELS:

2000 - 2001 (BE/BR) Ram Truck

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO 2000 AND 2001 (BE/BR) RAM TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH A 5.2L, 5.9L, OR 8.0L ENGINE AND CALIBRATION LEVEL PRIOR TO (LESS OR LOWER THAN) THOSE LISTED IN THE OVERVIEW ABOVE.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some vehicles may exhibit one or more of the following performance conditions:

1. Perceived lack of power in third gear due to converter lock-up.

2. Surge after lock-up (40-45 m.p.h.) This reprogramming raises torque converter lock-up speed to 52 m.p.h.

NOTE:
# 2 ABOVE APPLIES ONLY TO THE BE/BR 1500 4X4 EQUIPPED WITH THE 3.55 REAR AXLE.

3. Transmission does not upshift from 3rd gear after a 4/3 downshift. (Most often noticed when cruise control is engaged.)

NOTE:
# 3 ABOVE APPLIES ONLY TO 2000 MODEL YEAR (BE/BR) TRUCKS.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Flash the controller using the MDS2 (Mopar Diagnostic System) and DRBIII(R)

NOTE:
DUE TO THE PCM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE, A DTC MAY BE SET IN OTHER MODULES (EATX, BCM, MIC, SKIM, ETC.) WITHIN THE VEHICLE, IF SO EQUIPPED. SOME DTC'S MAY CAUSE THE MIL TO ILLUMINATE.

ALL DTC'S RELATE TO A LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE MODULE THAT IS BEING REPROGRAMMED. CHECK ALL MODULES, RECORD THE FAULTS, AND ERASE THESE FAULTS PRIOR TO RETURNING THE VEHICLE TO THE CUSTOMER. ERASE ANY FAULTS IN THE PCM ONLY AFTER ALL OTHER MODULES HAVE HAD THEIR FAULTS ERASED.

NOTE:
THE FOLLOWING STEPS ARE REQUIRED BY LAW.

2. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Software Update Label" p/n 04669020 (Fig. 1). Attach the label to the PCM and cover the label with the clear plastic overlay.

3. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Modification Label" p/n 04275086 and attach the label near the VECI label (Fig. (STEP # 3)).
