DISCUSSION:

This bulletin explains information related to electrical system changes for the 2002 Minivans

EVIC - TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS)

The TPMS consists of the EVIC and four sensors in place of the tire air valves. The EVIC displays information related to the TPMS system. The system monitors air pressure in the four road tires (excludes spare). Pressure in the spare tire is not monitored. The system alerts the driver when tire pressure falls outside predetermined thresholds (pressure too low or too high). A message is then displayed on the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) located in the overhead console.

The TPMS uses radio and sensor technology to monitor tire air pressure levels. The battery operated sensors transmit tire pressure data to a receiver located in the overhead console. These transmissions occur once every minute at speeds over 20 mph (32km/h).

If any tire's pressure has exceeded the low or high pressure threshold, the EVIC will display a message and a chime sounds. This message will be displayed for the rest of the ignition cycle, or until the Low/High Tire pressure condition has been corrected. If the C/T, MENU, STEP or RESET button is pressed, the message is replaced by the new message requested; however, if the Low/High Tire condition has not been corrected, the Low/High Tire pressure message will be redisplayed. If a road tire is replaced by the spare, the TPM system will detect the swap and the message "SPARE TIRE IN USE?" Y/N (along with a chime) will be displayed to confirm the swap.

CAUTION:
THE USE OF TIRE SEALANTS IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED FOR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM. TIRE SEALANT CAN CLOG TIRE PRESSURE SENSORS.

CAUTION:
WHEN SERVICING A WHEEL AND TIRE ASSEMBLY, DO NOT USE A STANDARD VALVE STEM CAP OR CORE IN A TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR IN PLACE OF THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT STYLE SENSOR CAP AND CORE. TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR VALVE STEM CAPS AND CORES ARE SPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR THE SENSORS.

CAUTION:
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL A TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR IN A STEEL WHEEL OR AFTERMARKET WHEEL. USE TIRE PRESSURE SENSORS IN ORIGINAL STYLE FACTORY WHEELS ONLY.

NOTE:
IF THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH A TPM SYSTEM, MARK THE TIRE INDICATING THE LOCATION OF THE TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY ON THE VEHICLE. UPON INSTALLATION, THE TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY WILL NEED TO BE INSTALLED ON THE SAME CORNER OF THE VEHICLE WHERE IT WAS REMOVED OR THE TPMS SENSORS WILL NEED TO BE RETRAINED.

RADIOS

Connectors - All radios except the RAS radio have new connectors and ground strap locations.

RAS Radios - Vehicles equipped with RBB or higher content radios CANNOT BE downgraded to an RAS radio. If a vehicle with an RBB or higher content radio is downgraded to an RAS radio, the radio light dimming feature will not work. This is due to a wiring change cannot be reprogrammed by the DRBIII.

Rear Audio (Sales Code RDT) Operating Instructions - The Rear Seat Audio System allows passengers to listen to a different music source, through headphones, other than what is playing through the vehicle's speaker system. A remote control is provided for functions such as changing stations, tracks, discs and modes while listening to Rear Seat Audio. The radio must be on to use the Rear Seat Audio System. The rear audio headphone kit that is delivered with all RBU radios includes 2 headphones, 1 remote control, 8 batteries and an instruction sheet.

NOTE:
REFER TO THE OWNER'S MANUAL FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION INCLUDING BATTERY REPLACEMENT.

^ Headphone interference or static may be caused by roadside powerlines or antennas, and 900 MHz cordless phones if held in close proximity to the headphones. Also weak headphone batteries may cause static or interference.

^ Dealers also need to ensure that the "Rear Seat Audio Operating Instructions", which are part of the headphone kit, get passed along to the customer and not thrown out during vehicle prep.

STEERING WHEEL AUDIO CONTROLS & POWER ACCESSORY DISPLAY

On vehicles so equipped, the steering wheel audio controls will now operate during the power accessory delay. The remainder of the power accessory delay feature is unchanged.

TRANSMISSION

EATX - The "P" code numbers for EATX diagnostic fault codes have been changed for 2002 model year.

2.4UEATX Transmission - The 3 speed Automatic Transaxle will be phased out during the 2002 MY. The RS 2.4L will then use the 4 speed (41TE) Electronic Automatic Transaxle (EATX). This will be a running change in the September time frame. The transmission electrical system and diagnostics of the EATX on the 2.4L is similar to that of the existing 3.3L and 3.8L applications.

A new EATX Controller pinion factor is introduced with the 2.4L application to address the new final drive RS 2.4L / EATX combination on the existing RS 215/70R15 tires.

The EATX Controller for the RS 2.4L application is the same part number as that of the existing RS 2002 MY 3.3L and 3.8L applications.

EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR)

The EGR and PCM software to operate the EGR was phased out during the early production of the 2002 model year. Refer to TSB 18-026-01 for additional information.

CRUISE CONTROL SWITCHES

New cruise control switches with diagnostic resistors are used. The engine controller learns if the vehicle has speed control without the need to activate any switch functions. The engine controller will set P code diagnostic faults if the cruise switches or associated wiring are open or shorted.

In conjunction with these new switches, the connectors at the switches have unique indexes to prevent installation in a 2001 vehicle.

Switch operating functions, features and service steps for replacement, remain unchanged.

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER

A new cluster is used for the RS 2.4L EATX, which has 3 gauges (speedometer, fuel and temperature) and an electronic display (vacuum fluorescent) PRNDL indicator. This replaces the current cluster with 3 gauges and mechanical PRNDL indicator assembly. This change eliminates the mechanical PRNDL indicator as well as the attaching bracket to the steering column and the nut/washer used on 2001 MY RS 2.4L 3ATX.

For all RS lowline vehicles not equipped with security alarm or sentry key, the cluster has been revised to delete the tachometer. A trim plug replaces the information center located above the cluster. This was a running change in the early October time frame, when the new cluster for the RS 2.4L EATX became available. For RS lowline vehicles equipped with security alarm, keyless entry, or sentry key (namely Fleet and Canadian vehicles), the tachometer cluster and message center will continue to be used.

For all RS/RG vehicles, the headlamp out warning indicator has been eliminated.

For all RS/RG vehicles, the cluster has been revised to increase the time from 5 to 10 seconds to get into "self diagnostics" mode, when the trip reset knob is pressed. This change was made to reduce the potential for customers getting into this mode unintentionally. In addition, a self-correcting feature allows the cluster to re-calibrate itself upon the next ignition cycle should the gauges become stuck mid-scale. This was a running change in the early October time frame.

OVERHEAD CONSOLE

On RS highline vehicles equipped with 0/H consoles, CMTC-UGDO will now be the base console replacing the Compass/Temp version used in 2001 MY RS vehicles.

On RS premium vehicles, the EVIC 0/H console will be available for those equipped with right and left power sliding doors and/or power liftgate. Also, the EVIC console with right and left power sliding doors is a new version.

On all RS/RG vehicles equipped with an 0/H console, the LED light has been re-positioned to better illuminate the I/P cupholders and front portion of the center removable console. A brighter LED to provide enhanced illumination was a running change in the October time frame.

On RS vehicles equipped with an EVIC 0/H console, TPMS (tire pressure monitoring) feature has been added. The console EVIC displays a message it a tire's pressure is too low or high. For more details, refer to the TPMS section in this document.

On RG diesel vehicles equipped with an 0/H console, the service interval maximum has been changed to 20,000 km to increase customer satisfaction. For 2001 MY, the service interval maximum was 12,000 km. Refer to the Owner's Manual and/or Service Manual for additional information.

On RS vehicles equipped with an 0/H console, the mounting screw/washer located in the storage bin has been changed to a Phillips head from a torx head type. This was done to aid Manufacturing. In addition, the storage bin foam divider has been removed for added flexibility.

INTERIOR LAMPS

On RS lowline vehicles, the front header reading/courtesy lamp and the switchable mid-dome lamp are no longer standard, but is optionally available as part of the Overhead Light Group.

On RS lowline and highline vehicles, only a single liftgate lamp is available on the passenger side with a color keyed trim plug used on the driver side. Two lamps were offered in 2001 MY RS and will continue only for the premium and luxury models.

The Light Package has been restructured for RS. This includes an Overhead Light Group (front header lamp and switchable mid dome lamp) and a Courtesy Light Group (illuminated vanity sun visors and glove box lamp).

Note:
The halo ignition key light has been eliminated for 2002 MY RS/RG.

For lowline vehicles without a power mirror switch, the nomenclature on the headlamp switch will not be lit at night. This will be a running change.

Automatic Temperature Control Lighting - The ATC head electronic display illumination level will be adjusted. This was a running in mid October.

Radio Lighting - The electronic display illumination level is adjusted for daytime conditions. The amber LED's for the equalizer (bass-mid-treble) adjustment buttons of the radio are eliminated.

12 VOLT OUTLET

On RS lowline vehicles, the lower I/P console 12 volt outlet has been eliminated and replaced with a black colored plug.

On vehicles equipped with the center removable console, the spring loaded flip cover has been replaced with a tethered cover for this 12-V outlet.

SMOKER'S PACKAGE

The Smoker's Package will now only be available through Mopar.

FRONT DOOR REFLECTOR

The front door reflectors have been eliminated due to the deletion of the HVAC ducts in the front doors.
