Running Board Discoloration

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves replacing the discolored running board(s).

MODELS:

2004 (HB) Durango

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with running boards that are entirely gray (no part of the running board is body colored) (sales code MRN).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The customer may describe a blotchy whitening or discoloration on the mold in color (gray) area of the running board.

DIAGNOSIS:

If the customer describes and the technician verifies the Symptom/Condition, perform the Repair Procedure.





PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Raise the vehicle on a suitable hoist.

CAUTION:
Support the running board as necessary during the removal and installation procedure so that it does not fall on to the technician or damage the vehicle and/or running board.





2. Remove the discolored running board from the mounting brackets by removing the 3 bolts on each of the three brackets supporting the running board (Fig. 1).

NOTE:
Do not remove the mounting brackets from the vehicle.

3. Place the new running board, p/n 5HP06ZSPAC, up side down on a clean, protective pad, on a suitable bench. Remove the 3 mounting brackets from the new running board. Discard the brackets.

4. Inspect the nuts on the running board to ensure that they are in place and in good condition. Replace any damaged nuts before proceeding with p/n 06101445.

5. Place the new running board on the 3 brackets mounted on the vehicle, making sure not to contact the vehicle body.

6. Install and hand tighten the middle bolt on the middle mounting bracket.

7. Install and hand tighten the middle bolt on each of the remaining two mounting brackets.

8. Center the running board fore and aft.

9. Move the running board inward as far a possible without contacting the body of the vehicle, while maintaining fore/aft centering. Be sure that there is a 12.7 mm (0.5 in.) gap between the running board and the vehicle body.

10. Tighten the center bolt in the front bracket to 27 N.m (20 ft. lbs.).

11. Tighten the center bolt in the rear bracket to 27 N.m (20 ft. lbs.).

12. Tighten the center bolt in the center bracket to 27 N.m (20 ft. lbs.).

13. Install the remaining 2 bolts in each bracket and tighten to 27 N.m (20 ft.lbs.).

14. If one running board was discolored, proceed to Step # 16. If both running boards were discolored, proceed to Step # 15.

15. Repeat Step # 2 through Step # 13 on the opposite side of the vehicle. When completed, proceed to next step.

16. Lower the vehicle.
