Audio System - Loses Frequency Setting/Mode

THIS BULLETIN IS BEING PROVIDED IN ADVANCE. THE SOFTWARE WILL BE AVAILABLE ON A StarSCAN(TM) SOFTWARE UPDATE CD JANUARY 13, 2004.

SUBJECT:
Radio Looses Current Mode or Tuned Frequency

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves reprogramming the Radio with new software.

MODELS:
2004 (HB) Durango

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a memory power seat, sales code JPP, and memory radio, sales code RAQ or REF, built on or before December 5, 2003 (MDH 1205XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The vehicle operator may experience the radio changing modes or tuned frequency when re-entering the vehicle using the key fob. For example; when the vehicle was turned off the CD player was operating and when restarted the AM radio is operating.

DIAGNOSIS:

1. Determine the radio "Software (Code) Part Number". Using the StarSCAN tool at the "Home" screen:

a. Select "ECU View"

b. Touch the screen to highlight the radio in the list of modules.

c. Select "More Options"

d. Select "ECU Detail"

e. Record the "Software (Code) Part Number" displayed on the "ECU Details" screen, for later reference.

2. If the radio "Software (Code) Part Number" is 04839326AH, 04839329AG, or lower perform the Repair Procedure. If the "Software (Code) Part Number" is 04839326AI, 04839329AH, or higher further diagnosis is required and this service bulletin does not apply.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

NOTE:
Before flashing this module, make sure the StarSCAN is operating at the latest level and this is the latest flash file available from the StarSCAN update CD. If it is, then press "OK" to continue flashing. If not, press "Cancel" and download the latest flash file from the CD to the StarSCAN. To determine the latest StarSCAN software version level available refer to website under the "Latest News" link.

NOTE:
For detailed information on the operation of the StarSCAN tool, refer to the Quick Reference documentation provided in the StarSCAN documentation kit. In addition, more recent information may also be available at the website. Look under "Training Aids" and also under "Download Center > Frequently Asked Questions" for more help.

CAUTION:
Be sure all connections are good and DO NOT interrupt the flash process. If this flash process is interrupted/aborted, the radio will not be recoverable. The radio will have to be replaced.





1. Insert the USB Key, into the USB port on the TechCONNECT or equivalent PC (Fig. 1).

2. Insert the StarSCAN Software Update CD into the TechCONNECT or equivalent PC. The StarSCAN Software Update CD will start automatically.

a. Select "Controller Flash".

b. Follow the on screen instructions.

3. At the "Select the type of information you wish to enter." screen:

a. If the old "Part Number" was recorded in Diagnosis (STEP # 1), proceed to (STEP # 4).

b. If the old "Part Number" is not known, proceed to (STEP # 5).

4. Select "Enter part number".

a. Follow the on screen instructions. Enter the "Software (Code) Part Number" (use capital letters) recorded in Diagnosis (STEP # 1) when prompted to do so. Follow the on screen instructions. Select "Next" after each step. Select "Finish" after completing the last step.

b. Proceed to (STEP # 6).

5. Select "Enter YME Information".

a. Follow the on screen instructions. Select "Next" after each step. Select "Finish" after completing the last step.

b. Proceed to (STEP # 6).

6. Using the mouse highlight the appropriate "Calibration"

a. Select "Save to USB"

b. Follow the on screen instructions. Select "Next" after each step. Select "Finish" after completing the last step.





7. With the StarSCAN tool powered OFF, connect the USB Key and Gender Changer to the StarSCAN tool USB port (Fig. 2).

8. Open the hood, install a battery charger and verify the battery state is above 12.5 volts.

9. Connect the StarSCAN tool to the vehicle.

10. Power ON the StarSCAN tool.

11. Download the file from the USB key to the StarSCAN tool. Using the StarSCAN tool at the "Home" screen:

a. Select "Flash Download"

b. Select "Use USB device"

c. Follow the on screen instructions. Select "Next" after each step. Select "Finish" after completing the last step.

d. At the "Flash File List" screen, highlight the appropriate radio "Calibration".

e. Select "Download to Scantool"

f. When the download is complete, select "Close"

12. To return to the "Home" screen:

a. Select "Show Shortcuts"

b. Select "Home"

13. Download the file from the StarSCAN tool to the vehicle. Using the StarSCAN tool at the "Home" screen:

a. Select "ECU View"

b. Browse the list of controllers using the scroll arrows. Highlight the Radio.

c. Select "More Options"

d. Select "ECU Flash"

e. Highlight the appropriate radio "Calibration" from the list.

f. Select "Update Controller"

g. When update is completed, select "OK"

NOTE:
Due to the Radio programming procedure, a DTC may be set in other modules (TCM, FCM/CGW, CCN, WCM, etc.) within the vehicle, if so equipped. Some DTC's may cause the MIL to illuminate. Check all modules using "ECU View" from the Home screen, record the DTC's, and erase these DTC's prior to returning the vehicle to the customer. Erase any DTC's in the PCM only after all other modules have had their DTC's erased.
