NUMBER: 08-035-06

GROUP: Electrical

DATE: August 16, 2006

THIS BULLETIN IS BEING PROVIDED IN ADVANCE. DO NOT ORDER PARTS OR PERFORM ANY ACTIONS RELATED TO THIS BULLETIN UNTIL AUGUST 18, 2006.

SUBJECT:
Left Outside Rear View Mirror Heater Fails To Warm

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves adding a wire to the body electrical harness.

MODELS:
2006 (HB) Durango

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles built on or before June 09, 2006 (MDH 0609XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The customer may notice that the left outside rear view mirror may not heat when the rear window defroster has been enabled. This may be caused by a missing wire in the vehicle body harness for the mirror heater circuit.

DIAGNOSIS:

NOTE:
A very limited number of vehicles (approximately 300 or less) may have this condition.

1. Remove the left front door scuff plate panel.

2. Remove the left front lower A-pillar (kick) trim panel and pull back the front carpet.

3. Locate the body harness part number (Fig. 1). The harness part number can be found on the body harness near where the body harness enters the black plastic floor harness trough.

4. If the body harness part number is 56005421AD or 56005421AE, then perform the Repair Procedure.

5. If the body harness part number is not one of the above part numbers listed in Step 4, then this bulletin does not apply. Install the carpet, lower A-pillar (kick) trim panel, and front door scuff plate panel.

PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Remove and isolate the negative battery cable from the battery.

2. With the scuff plate and kick panel already removed, inspect the junction block (fuse/relay block) located on the inner left lower A-pillar metal panel (Fig. 1). There are three (3) large 40-way connectors attached to the junction block. Note the 40-way connector that is closest to the floor panel and nearest to the plastic wire harness trough. One end of the jumper harness will be attached to this 40-way body harness connector.

3. Remove all five (5) electrical connectors from the junction block.

4. Remove the three (3) fasteners used to attach the junction block to the vehicle lower A-pillar panel.

5. Remove the junction block from the vehicle.

6. Locate the two (2) body harness to door harness in-line electrical connectors (a 10-way and a 16-way). These connectors are located above the junction block, behind the sound insulation, and on the A-pillar metal panel.

7. Disconnect the 16-way (black) body harness side of the in-line connector from the door harness.

8. Locate terminal cavity 14 in the body harness in-line 16-way connector (Fig. 2).

9. Carefully pry out the (white) terminal retaining wedge on the 16-way body harness in-line connector. The retaining wedge is used to secure the electrical wire terminals in the connector.

10. Install the appropriate jumper harness terminal end into cavity 14 of the 16-way connector.

11. Install the terminal retaining wedge to the 16-way connector body. Verify that all terminals in the 16-way connector are fully seated and that the retaining wedge is properly installed.

12. Connect the 16-way body harness side of the in-line connector to the door harness connector. Verify that the connector is properly installed and connected.

13. Route the jumper harness down and along the main body harness towards the junction block. Tape the jumper harness at several locations to the body harness.

14. Locate the body harness 40-way connector that connects to the junction block. This 40-way connector is closest to the floor panel and nearest to the plastic harness trough (Fig. 1).

15. Remove the dress cover from the back of the 40-way connector (Fig. 3).

16. Locate terminal cavity 15 in the 40-way connector.

17. Carefully pry up on the (green) 40-pin terminal retaining wedge.

18. Install the remaining jumper harness terminal end into cavity 15 of the 40-way connector (Fig. 4).

19. Install the 40-way terminal retaining wedge. Verify that all terminals in the 40-way connector are fully installed and that the retaining wedge is properly seated.

20. Verify that the jumper harness is properly secured to the body harness.

21. Install the dress cover to the back of the 40-way connector.

22. Install the junction block to the vehicle and secure it with the three (3) attaching fasteners.

23. Install the five (5) electrical connectors to the junction block.

24. Verify that the body harness, with new jumper harness, is correctly installed to the vehicle.

25. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery.

26. Verify that the left outside rear view mirror heater operates correctly.

27. Install the left lower A-pillar (kick) trim panel

28. Install the left front door scuff plate panel.

29. Set the clock to the correct time.
