Variable Speed Fuel Pump Module (HEV) - Description

DESCRIPTION - HEV

The variable speed fuel pump module (5) is located on the top of the fuel tank and contains the following:

- Internal fuel filter
- Separate fuel pick-up, or inlet filter (3)
- Fuel pressure regulator (4)
- Variable speed fuel pump (2)
- Lock ring to retain the pump module to the tank
- O-ring gasket between the tank flange and pump module
- Fuel gauge sending unit (fuel level sensor) (1)
- Fuel line connection (6)

If the fuel gauge sending unit (fuel level sensor), variable speed fuel pump, primary inlet filter, fuel filter or fuel pressure regulator require service, the variable speed fuel pump module must be replaced as a unit.

Variable Speed Fuel Pump

The Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) uses a variable speed fuel pump module, an additional fuel pump speed relay and a resistor to provide low speed capability to the fuel pump system. A diagnostic monitor circuit allows the PCM to verify operation of the following two circuits:

- Fuel pump relay control circuit which results in closing the fuel pump relay allowing current to flow through the fuel pump speed relay for high speed fuel pump operation.
- Fuel pump speed relay control circuit which results in closing the fuel pump relay and fuel pump speed relay allowing current to flow through the resistor for low speed fuel pump operation.

The variable speed fuel pump is not a separate, serviceable component.

Fuel Filters

Two fuel filters are used. One is located at the bottom of the fuel pump module. The other is located inside the module. A separate frame mounted fuel filter is not used.

Both fuel filters are designed for extended service. They do not require normal scheduled maintenance. Filters should only be replaced if a diagnostic procedure indicates to do so.

Fuel Pressure Regulator

The fuel pressure regulator is located within the fuel pump module and is not a separate, serviceable component.

Fuel Gauge Sending Unit (fuel level sensor)

The fuel gauge sending unit (fuel level sensor) is attached to the side of the fuel pump module. The sending unit consists of a float, a float arm, and a variable resistor track (card).
