Cylinder Head - Removal
REMOVAL - CYLINDER HEAD(S)
RIGHT CYLINDER HEAD
1. Perform the fuel system pressure relief procedure Service and Repair.
2. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
3. Drain cooling system Service and Repair.
4. Remove the engine cover.
5. Remove the air cleaner element housing Air Cleaner Body - Removal.
6. Remove the upper intake manifold (1) including EGR tube Intake Manifold - Removal.
7. Remove fuel rail and lower intake manifold (1) Intake Manifold - Removal.
8. Raise the vehicle Service and Repair.
9. Remove right front tire Tires and Wheels - Removal.
10. Remove right inner splash shield (1) Splash Shield - Removal.
11. Remove accessory drive belt (2) Serpentine Accessory Drive Belt - Removal
12. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner (1).
13. Remove crankshaft damper bolt.
14. Using Puller 1023 (1) and Crankshaft Insert 9020 (2), remove crankshaft damper.
15. Remove lower outer timing belt cover bolts.
16. Remove right exhaust maniverter (2) Exhaust Manifold - Removal.
17. Lower vehicle.
18. Remove the accessory drive belt idler pulley (2).
19. Remove the power steering mounting bolts (3) and set the pump aside Power Steering Pump - Removal.
20. Support the engine with a block of wood and the floor jack.
21. Remove the upper engine mount Engine Mount Insulator - Removal.
22. Remove the power steering reservoir bolts and set reservoir (1) aside.
23. Remove the remaining outer timing belt cover bolts and cover (1).
24. Rotate the engine to TDC and align timing belt marks (1, 8, 9).
25. Remove the timing belt tensioner (12) and reset the tensioner . Engine Timing Tensioner - Removal
26. Remove the timing belt (4) . Timing Belt & Sprockets - Removal
27. Remove the right valve cover to cylinder head ground strap.
28. Remove the EGR valve (2) with two bolts (6) and gasket.
29. Remove the right cylinder head cover Cylinder Head Cover(s) - Removal.
30. Remove ten bolts and the right rocker arm assembly (2).
31. Remove three bolts (2) and the right rear camshaft thrust plate (1).
32. Counterhold the cam gear and remove the right cam gear retaining bolt.
33. Push the camshaft out of the back of the cylinder head approximately 3.5 inches and remove the cam gear.
34. Remove the three inner timing cover to right cylinder head retaining bolts (1).
35. Remove the cylinder head bolts in REVERSE of the tightening sequence shown.
NOTE: Because of clearance restrictions when removing the right cylinder head, the front four cylinder head bolts (2) must be loosened, raised and supported with a rubber band (3) before the cylinder head can be removed.
36. Push the camshaft (5) out of the back of the cylinder head approximately 3.5 inches and remove the cylinder head.
37. Clean and inspect all mating surfaces.
LEFT CYLINDER HEAD
1. Perform the fuel system pressure relief procedure Service and Repair.
2. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
3. Drain cooling system Service and Repair.
4. Remove the engine cover.
5. Remove the air cleaner element housing Air Cleaner Body - Removal.
6. Remove the upper intake manifold (1) Intake Manifold - Removal.
7. Remove fuel rail and lower intake manifold (1) Intake Manifold - Removal.
8. Remove the radiator crossmember (2) Radiator Crossmember - Removal
9. Remove coolant recovery container (1) and radiator fan assembly (2) Cooling Fan - Removal.
10. Raise the vehicle Service and Repair.
11. Remove right front tire Tires and Wheels - Removal.
12. Remove right inner splash shield (1) Splash Shield - Removal.
13. Remove accessory drive belt (2) Serpentine Accessory Drive Belt - Removal
14. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner (1).
15. Remove crankshaft damper bolt.
16. Using Puller 1023 (1) and Crankshaft Insert 9020 (2), remove crankshaft damper.
17. Remove lower outer timing belt cover bolts.
18. Remove the left exhaust maniverter Exhaust Manifold - Removal.
19. Lower vehicle.
20. Remove the accessory drive belt idler pulley (2).
21. Remove the power steering mounting bolts (3) and set the pump aside Power Steering Pump - Removal.
22. Support the engine with a block of wood and the floor jack.
23. Remove the upper engine mount Engine Mount Insulator - Removal.
24. Remove the power steering reservoir bolts and set reservoir (1) aside.
25. Remove the remaining outer timing belt cover bolts and cover (1).
26. Rotate the engine to TDC and align timing belt marks (1, 8, 9).
27. Remove the timing belt tensioner (12) and reset the tensioner . Engine Timing Tensioner - Removal
28. Remove the timing belt (4) . Timing Belt & Sprockets - Removal
29. Remove the left cylinder head cover to cylinder head ground strap.
30. Remove the left cylinder head cover Cylinder Head Cover(s) - Removal.
31. Remove ten bolts and left rocker arm assembly (2).
32. Remove three bolts (2) and the left camshaft thrust plate (1).
33. Counterhold the left cam gear and remove the cam gear retaining bolt.
34. Push the camshaft out of the back of the cylinder head approximately 3.5 inches and remove the cam gear.
35. Remove the four inner timing cover to left cylinder head retaining bolts (1) and (2).
36. Remove the cylinder head bolts in REVERSE of the tightening sequence shown.
37. Push the camshaft (5) out of the back of the cylinder head approximately 3.5 inches and remove the cylinder head.
38. Clean and inspect all mating surfaces.
