P0505
P0505-ENGINE SPEED AT IDLE - DATA ERRATIC, INTERMITTENT OR INCORRECT
For a complete wiring diagram, refer to the Wiring Information Electrical Diagrams.
Theory of Operation
This algorithm checks if the governor control system is unable to maintain idle speed. If idle speed is off by more than 50 RPM for a calibrated amount of time (15 seconds), the diagnostic sets a fault.
- When Monitored:
While engine is idling.
- Set Condition:
Idle speed error detected.
Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting Procedure
1. OTHER DTCS
1. Ignition on, engine not running.
2. With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Are any other DTCs present?
Yes
- Repair all other DTCs First.
No
- Go To 2
2. COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR
1. Remove the Coolant Temperature Sensor and reconnect the wiring to the sensor.
2. Turn the ignition on.
3. Monitor scan tool, while heating the sensor with an external heat source (DO NOT USE OPEN FLAME).
Does the reading from the sensor increase at least -15°C (5°F) on the scan tool?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Powertrain Verification Test.
3. P0505 ACTIVE
1. With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Is P0505 Active?
Yes
- Repair the erratic idle condition.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Powertrain Verification Test.
No
- Repair complete.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Powertrain Verification Test.
