Differential Carrier - Installation

INSTALLATION

Special Tools:











NOTE: If differential bearings or differential case are replaced, differential bearing preload and gear backlash must be adjusted.

1. Install Spreader (1) and Spreader Retainers (2) on Spreader Adapters and tighten spreader turnbuckle finger-tight.





2. Attach Dial Indicator (1) to spreader retainer stud. Load indicator plunger (2) against opposite side of the housing and zero the indicator
3. Spread the differential case 0.34 mm (0.013 in). CAUTION: Never spread the differential housing over 0.34 mm (0.013 in). Failure to follow these instructions will damage the housing.






4. Remove dial indicator.
5. Install differential case (1) bearing cups (2) and shims into housing.
6. Install bearing caps and loosely install bolts.
7. Loosen turnbuckle remove spreader retainers and spreader.





8. Remove spreader adapters (1) from differential housing (2).





9. Tighten bearing cap (1) bolts in a criss-cross pattern to 54-68 Nm (39-50 ft. lbs.).
10. Install right axle shaft and half shafts.
11. Install differential housing cover.
