Body - Pop/Squeak From L/H Rear Of Truck Bed When Loading

SUBJECT:
Popping And/Or Squeak Noise At The Left Rear Bedside Tailgate Area When Loading The Pickup Box

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves installing seven rivets at the left side pickup box inner tailgate opening pivot bracket.

MODELS:
2012 (DS) RAM 1500 Pickup

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles built before March, 03, 2012 (MDH0303XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Popping and/or squeak noise at the left rear bedside tailgate area when loading the pickup box.

DIAGNOSIS:
If the customer describes the symptom, perform the Repair Procedure.





PARTS REQUIRED:

NOTE:
One 4.2oz bottle of 3M 08681 Single Step Primer can service 25 vehicles.





SPECIAL TOOLS/EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

NOTE:
The MATCO Silver Eagle HD 1/4" Riveter must be used to properly collapse the structural rivets. Other pneumatic and all manual riveters will not achieve the compression requirements to properly install the rivets.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Remove the tailgate assembly. Refer to the detailed procedures available in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT > : Service Info > 23-Body > Exterior > Decklid/Hatch/Liftgate/Tailgate > Tailgate > Removal.

2. Remove the left rear taillight assembly. Refer to the detailed procedures available in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT > : Service Info > 08-Electrical > 8L-Lamps and Lighting > Lamp/Lighting-Exterior > LAMP, Tail Stop Turn > Removal > Lamp.





3. With the vehicle on a level surface drill four 17/64" (6.5mm) holes at the spot weld locations identified in (Fig. 1).





4. Coat all drill holes (1) with 3M 08682 Single step primer or equivalent (Fig. 2).

5. Install the rivets (2) and compress them using the MATCO silver eagle HD 1/4" riveter once the primer has cured (Fig. 2).

6. Lightly scuff the head of each rivet (3) with 3M maroon paint prep pad 0777 or equivalent (Fig. 2).





7. Clean (1) each of the rivet heads using isopropyl alcohol (Fig. 3)

8. Using a brush apply touch up paint (2) to each rivet (Fig. 3).

9. Raise the vehicle to access the bottom portion of the bedside inner. Refer to the detailed procedures available in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT >: Service Info > 04 - Vehicle Quick Reference > Hoisting.





10. Drill three 17/64" (6.5mm) holes using a right angle drill at the locations shown in (Fig. 4).

11. Repeat Step # 4 through Step # 8 for the three lower inner bedside welds.

12. Lower the vehicle and install the left tail lamp assembly. Refer to the detailed procedures available in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT > : Service Info > 08-Electrical > 8L-Lamps and Lighting > Lamp/Lighting-Exterior > LAMP, Tail Stop Turn > Installation > Lamp.

13. Once the touch-up paint has cured, install the tailgate assembly. Refer to the detailed procedures available in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT > : Service Info > 23-Body > Exterior > Decklid/Hatch/Liftgate/Tailgate > Tailgate > Installation.
