Side Curtain Air Bag - Installation

Air Bag, Side Curtain

INSTALLATION

WARNING:
- To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.

- To avoid serious or fatal injury when removing a deployed airbag, rubber gloves, eye protection, and a long-sleeved shirt should be worn. There may be deposits on the airbag unit and other interior surfaces. In large doses, these deposits may cause irritation to the skin and eyes.

- To avoid serious or fatal injury, use extreme care to prevent any foreign material from entering the side curtain airbag, or becoming entrapped between the side curtain airbag cushion and the headliner. Failure to observe this warning could result in occupant injuries upon airbag deployment.

NOTE: The following procedure is for replacement of an ineffective or damaged side curtain airbag. If the airbag is ineffective or damaged, but not deployed, review the recommended procedures for Handling Non-Deployed Supplemental Restraints. If the side curtain airbag has been deployed, review the recommended procedures for Service After A Supplemental Restraint Deployment before removing the airbag from the vehicle.

1. Position the side curtain airbag (1) and inflator (4) into the vehicle as a unit.
2. Position the inflator mounting bracket to the inner roof rail above the C-pillar (5) and engage the locating tab of the mounting bracket with the locating hole in the roof side rail.
3. Engage the plastic push-in retainer (6) that temporarily secures the inflator mounting bracket to the inner roof rail.
4. Install and tighten the two screws (2) that secure the inflator mounting bracket to the inner roof rail. Tighten the screws to 9 N.m (80 in. lbs.).
5. Reconnect the body wire harness connector (3) to the connector receptacle at the rear of the inflator (2). Be certain to route the wiring outboard of the inflator, between the inflator and the roof side rail.

6. Working from the inflator toward the front of the vehicle, engage the three mounting tabs of the side curtain airbag (5) over the weld studs on the inner roof rail above the rear and front door openings.
7. Working from the inflator toward the front of the vehicle, engage the plastic push-in retainers (3) that temporarily secure the side curtain airbag and the front tether to the inner roof rail over the B-pillar (4) and the inner A-pillar (1).
8. Install and tighten the three nuts (2) that secure the side curtain airbag mounting tabs to the weld studs on the inner roof rail above the front and rear door openings. Tighten the nuts to 9 N.m (80 in. lbs.).
9. Engage the metal hook (6) that secures the front tether to the inner A-pillar near the belt line.
10. Engage the plastic clip that secures the front tether hook to the inner A-pillar. Both the hook and the plastic clip are secured in the same slotted hole of the A-pillar, but the hook MUST be installed prior to the clip.

11. Position the Head Impact Countermeasure (HIC) rib cartridge (3) over the airbag inflator (2) above the C-pillar (5) and align the front and rear locating bosses of the cartridge with the slots of the inner roof rail. Be certain the wiring and, if equipped, the sunroof drain hose (4) are routed through the clearance notch at the bottom of the cartridge, between the cartridge and the roof rail.
12. Using hand pressure, press the HIC rib cartridge toward the inner roof rail until the three snap clip retainers snap into place. Be certain the snap clips are fully engaged with the slots in the roof rail.
13. Engage the plastic push-in retainer (1) that secures the side curtain airbag (6) to the HIC rib cartridge.

14. Working from the inflator toward the rear of the vehicle, engage the mounting tabs of the side curtain airbag (2) to the weld studs on the inner roof rail above the quarter window opening and, if equipped with seven passenger seating, the upper liftgate opening inner reinforcement.
15. Engage the plastic push-in retainers (5) that temporarily secure the airbag or rear tether mounting tabs to the inner roof rail above the D-pillar (4).
16. Install and tighten the nut (1) that secures the side curtain airbag mounting tab to the weld stud on the inner roof rail above the quarter window opening.
17. On vehicles with 5 passenger seating, install and tighten the screw that secures the rear tether retainer clip (3) to the inner roof rail above the D-pillar (4). Be certain the anti-rotation tab of the retainer clip is engaged in the clearance hole of the roof rail. Tighten the screw to 9 N.m (80 in. lbs.).
18. On vehicles with 7 passenger seating, install and tighten the screw (3) that secures the side curtain airbag mounting tab to the inner roof rail above the D-pillar. Tighten the screw to 9 N.m (80 in. lbs.).
19. On vehicles with 7 passenger seating, install and tighten the nut that secures the side curtain airbag rear mounting tab to the weld stud on the upper liftgate opening inner reinforcement. Tighten the nut to 9 N.m (80 in. lbs.).
20. Reinstall the headliner into the vehicle.
21. Do not reconnect the battery negative cable at this time. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Verification Test procedure should be performed following service of any SRS component.
