Disassembly

1945
1. Place carburetor on suitable repair stand to prevent damage to throttle valves and to provide suitable working base.
2. Remove wire retainer on 1983-85 models, then remove bowl vent assembly.
3. On 1983-86 models, remove solenoid idle stop (SIS).
4. On all models, remove fast idle cam retaining clip, fast idle cam and link, then disconnect link.
5. Remove choke vacuum diaphragm, link and bracket assembly, then disengage link from slot in choke lever and place diaphragm aside for special cleaning.
6. On 1983-86 models, remove nut and washer from throttle shaft, then remove throttle lever and link, noting hole position of lever.
7. On all models, remove bowl cover screws.
8. Separate bowl cover from carburetor's body by tapping with suitable tool, then lift bowl cover straight up until vacuum piston stem, accelerator pump and main well tube are clear of main body.
9. Remove bowl cover gasket, cleaning gasket mating surfaces with suitable cleaner, if necessary.
10. Remove accelerator pump operating rod retainer screw and retainer.
11. Remove accelerator pump assembly retaining screw and the pump assembly.
12. Rotate pump operating rod and remove from bowl cover.
13. Remove pump operating rod grommet.
14. On 1986 models, the power piston assembly retaining ring is staked in position. Remove staking with a suitable sharp tool, then remove vacuum piston from bowl cover by depressing piston and allowing it to snap up against retaining ring.
15. On 1983-85 models, remove three screws and the power valve assembly from the air horn. This completes disassembly of bowl cover. The main well tube cannot be removed and must be blown out carefully from both inside and outside the cover.
16. Remove fuel inlet fitting valve assembly from main body, then separate gaskets from main parts.
17. Remove spring float shaft retainer, float shaft and float assembly.
18. Turn main body upside down and remove pump discharge check ball and weight.
19. Using tool C-3748 or equivalent, remove main jet.
20. Carefully depress power valve needle with a 3/8 inch wide screwdriver until screwdriver blade is squarely seated in slot on top of valve and remove valve assembly. The power valve assembly consists of seat, needle and spring. All of these components of the replacement power valve should be used when replacement is necessary.
21. Remove three main body to throttle body attaching screws, separate bodies and remove gasket.
22. Remove idle speed adjusting screw.
23. Remove plastic caps or concealment plugs for idle mixture screws, being careful not to damage screws, then remove mixture screws and springs.

6. Remove choke vacuum diaphragm, link and bracket assembly, Fig. 2, then disconnect link from slot in choke lever and place diaphragm aside to be cleaned separately.
7. Remove nut and washer from throttle shaft, then remove throttle lever and link, noting hole position of lever.
8. Remove screws and duty cycle solenoid.
9. Remove bowl cover screws.
10. Separate bowl cover from carburetor body by tapping with suitable tool, then lift bowl cover straight up until vacuum piston stem, accelerator pump and main well tube are clear of main body.
11. Remove bowl cover gasket, cleaning gasket mating surfaces with suitable nonmetal scraper.
12. Remove accelerator pump operating rod retainer screw and the retainer.
13. Remove accelerator pump assembly retaining screw and the pump assembly.
14. Rotate pump operating rod and remove from bowl cover.
15. Remove pump operating rod grommet.
