6A Checking System For Fault Codes


1. Connect diagnostic readout box to engine harness and put system into diagnostic mode.
2. Record all codes.
3. Initiate the appropriate diagnosis for the following fault code displays:
a. Code sequence 88-55 or 88-14-55 indicates no fault codes are present. Proceed to Step B.
b. Code sequence 88-21-55 or 88-14-21-55 indicates a fault in the distributor pickup coil. Proceed to Step E with dual pickup coils. Proceed to Step F with single pickup coil.
c. On V6-238/3.9L engines, code sequence 88-21-55 or 88-21-31-55 indicates a fault in the distributor pickup coil. Proceed to Step E.
d. On all 1985 models, code sequence 88-21-26-55 or 88-14-21-26-55 indicates a fault in the distributor/sensor ground circuit. Repair wire in cavity 9 of computer 10-way connector for an open circuit.
e. On all 1986---87 models, code sequence 88-21-26-28-55 or 88-14-21-26-28-55 indicates a fault in the distributor/sensor ground circuit. Repair wire in cavity 9 of computer 10-way connector for an open circuit.
f. On V6-238/3.9L engines, if a no code 88 appears, check if diagnostic readout box is operational. Proceed to Step J.
g. On all other models, if a no code 88 appears, proceed to Step H.
