3 Checking the SMEC & Engine Timing

Perform No Start Test 2, before proceeding.
1. Remove spark plugs and check tips for fuel fouling.
2. If plug tips are wet, clean spark plugs and reinstall.
3. Connect a timing light to engine, crank engine and check timing.
a. If timing is 0-16°, check compression and valve timing, proceed to Test 17.
b. If timing does not fall between 0-16°, crank engine and set timing to 10° BTC.
4. If engine starts, set timing to specification, then proceed to Test 17.
5. If engine does not start, turn ignition switch Off and disconnect SMEC 60-way connector. Inspect both halves of connector for pin or terminal damage, repair as necessary. If no damage is found, proceed to step 6.
6. Disconnect MAP sensor 3-way connector. Inspect for pin or terminal damage.
7. Connect an ohmmeter between violet/white wire at MAP sensor connector and at cavity 13 at 60-way connector.
8. If ohmmeter shows continuity, replace MAP sensor.
9. If ohmmeter shows no continuity, repair violet/white wire for an open circuit in harness splice, then proceed to Test 17.
