Shifter Housing

DISASSEMBLE

1. Remove roll pins from first and second speed shift fork and gate.
2. Push shift rail out through front to force expansion plug out of cover and remove rail, fork and gate. Cover detent ball access hole in cover to prevent ball and spring from flying out as rail clears hole.
3. Remove third and fourth speed rails, then remove reverse rail.
4. Compress reverse gear plunger, then remove retainer clip, plunger and spring from gate.

ASSEMBLE

When assembling subassemblies, use new expansion plugs, gaskets and seals. Lubricate all parts with clean transmission lubricant. Where grease is recommended, use oil soluble grease. Ensure oil return passages are not obstructed with grease.

1. Install spring on reverse gear plunger, then compress spring into reverse shift gate and install retaining clip.
2. Install reverse shift rail into cover and place detent spring and ball in position, then depress ball and slide rail over it.
3. Install gate and fork on rail, then install a new roll pin in gate and fork.
4. With reverse fork in neutral position, install the two interlock plungers in their bores.
5. Install interlock pin in third and fourth speed shift rail, then install rail in same manner as reverse shift rail.
6. Install first and second speed shift rail in same manner as reverse shift rail, ensuring interlock plunger is in position. Check interlocks by shifting reverse shift rail into reverse position. It should be impossible to shift all other rails when this rail is shifted.
7. If installing shift lever, lubricate spherical ball seat and place cap in position.
8. Install back-up light switch, if used.
9. Install new expansion plugs in bores of rail holes and install interlock hole plug.
