Axle Shaft

SHAFT-AXLE

REMOVAL
1. With vehicle in neutral, position vehicle on hoist.
2. Remove brake caliper adapter with caliper and remove rotor.





3. Remove differential housing cover (1) and drain lubricant.





4. Remove pinion mate shaft (1) lock screw (2).





5. Remove pinion mate shaft (2) from differential case.





6. Push axle shaft (1) inward and remove axle shaft C-lock (2).
7. Remove axle shaft.

INSTALLATION
1. Lubricate bearing bore and seal lip with gear lubricant.





2. Insert axle shaft (1) through seal (2), bearing and engage into side gear splines.





3. Insert C-lock (2) in end of axle shaft (1) then push axle shaft outward to seat C-lock in side gear.
4. Insert pinion mate shaft into differential case and through thrust washer and pinion gear.





5. Align hole in pinion mate shaft (1) with hole in differential case and install lock screw (3) with Loctite (R) 242 or equivalent. Tighten lock screw to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).





6. Apply a bead of orange Mopar Axle RTV sealant (2) or equivalent to the housing cover (1).

CAUTION: If housing cover is not installed within 3 to 5 minutes, the cover must be cleaned and new RTV applied. Failure to follow these instruction will result in a leak.

7. Install cover and tighten bolts in a criss-cross pattern to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
8. Fill differential lubricant to bottom of the fill plug hole.
9. Install fill hole plug and tighten to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
10. Install brake rotor and caliper adapter with caliper.
