SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Customer concern for oil leak at right drive seal.
FIGURE 1:
DIAGNOSIS
Inspect and verify that the suspected leak is originating from the right driveshaft extension seal (Figure 1). When the leak is verified to be in the oil seal area, do the following inspection and repair.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
The cause of the leak may not be due to a defective seal. The leak may be caused by failure of the driveshaft housing bushing due to poor microfinish of the bushing contact surface of the inner driveshaft housing.
Inspect the bushing for excessive wear or scoring. If the bushing is damaged, then replace the extension housing in accordance with the following procedure:
NOTE: TRANSAXLE REMOVAL IS NOT REQUIRED.
Disassembly
1. Disconnect battery.
2. Remove transaxle shift linkage.
3. Raise vehicle on hoist.
4. Remove front wheels.
5. Remove speedometer cable from transaxle.
6. Remove control arm ball joint through bolts.
7. Remove drive shafts.
8. Remove transaxle oil pan pump.
9. Remove valve body assembly (remove and discard transmission oil filter).
10. Remove left body splash shield.
11. Remove transaxle end cover.
12. Remove transfer gear nut.
13. Remove transfer gear and shim.
14. Remove governor support retainer.
15. Remove governor assembly.
16. Remove transfer shaft, snap ring, and retainer.
17. Remove differential cover.
18. Remove extension housing and retainer.
19. Remove bearing race from existing extension housing. Inspect for damage. If race is acceptable, install in new extension housing.
FIGURE 1:
Reassembly
1. Install new extension housing seal.
2. Install new extension and retainer with a .020 gauging shim.
NOTE: Add a bead of Mopar RTV Sealer to the extension housing groove as shown in Figure 1.
3. Install tool #L-4436 in the differential through the extension.
4. Install dial indicator and measure end play.
5. Remove retainer and install proper shim for preload.
6. Install tool #L-4436 in left side of differential through retainer.
7. Use a torque wrench and a long (18"-20") extension to measure the turning torque of the differential. Refer to the service manual shim chart for proper shim selection to obtain a 5 to 8 inch pound torque reading.
8. Install the differential cover.
9. Install the transfer shaft, snap ring, and retainer.
10. Install the governor assembly.
11. Install the governor support retainer.
12. Install the transfer gear, shim, and retaining nut.
13. Install the transaxle and cover.
14. Install the left body splash shield.
15. Install the valve body and a new oil filter.
16. Install transaxle oil pan.
17. IMPORTANT: Inspect the bushing surface of the right drive shaft inner bushing. Replace the housing if bushing surface is scored or otherwise damaged. If the bushing surface appears to be OK, then polish the surface with 320 grit or finer crocus cloth.
Clean the housing thoroughly and install the drive shaft.
18. Install the lower control arm ball joints and through bolts.
19. Reinstall the speedometer cable adapter.
20. Install front tire and wheel assemblies.
21. Lower vehicle.
22. Reinstall shift linkage and check adjustment.
23. Connect battery.
24. Refill transaxle with ATF per service manual instructions and check for leaks.
POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty
