This bulletin supersedes # 06-01-86, which should be removed from your files. This revision includes new art work to clarify the bent drive strap condition.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Clutch will not release, excessive spin time, or gear clash during reverse engagement.
DIAGNOSIS
Check the clutch for a five second or longer spin time with the engine warm and at curb idle.
To check the spin time, set the parking brake and depress the clutch fully to the floor. Then wait five seconds and shift into reverse, checking for gear clash. If clash is noted, the cause may be a damaged drive strap in the clutch pressure plate.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
The repair consists of replacing the clutch pressure plate assembly.
1. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle. (Refer to the appropriate service manual for specific removal procedure.)
2. Remove the clutch disc and pressure plate.
FIGURE 1:
3. The drive straps are the straps connecting the pressure plate to the cover (Figure 1). The straps are made of two long strips of steel with two small square steel washers attached at the rivets on the cover and at the pressure plate.
Inspect the clutch pressure plate drive straps for damage as follows:
NOTE:
NEW PRESSURE PLATES THAT YOU ARE INSTALLING SHOULD ALSO BE CHECKED PRIOR TO INSTALLATION AS DAMAGE TO THE DRIVE STRAPS MAY OCCUR DURING SHIPPING AND HANDLING.
A. Uniformity - all straps should look the same. No strap should be bent or straighter than another.
B. Separation of the straps - the two straps should have no gaps between them. Any visible gaps will cause clutch performance problems.
C. The steel washer must be flush to the long straps. If a piece of paper can be slipped under the washers, the clutch pressure plate is defective.
The pressure plate must be replaced if any of these conditions are noted during the inspection.
