SYMPTOM/CONDITION

A surge and/or bucking condition may be noticed during a light throttle, high rpm cruise (as in stop and go traffic, parking lot cruise, etc.).

The following repair applies to those models listed with Federal or California emissions package. It does not apply to those vehciles equipped with the 2.2L 2BBL high output engine (designated by an "8" in the eighth character of the VIN).

DIAGNOSIS

With vehicle at full operating temperature, install a tachometer (if vehicle is not equipped with tach) and road test vehicle. Accelerate and hold engine between 2000-3000 rpm in second gear. Then decelerate slightly (without closing throttle). If vehicle exhibits a surge while holding between 2000-3000 rpm, or starts to buck during a slight deceleration, perform the following repair procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED

1 ESA Module PN 5233524
1 Authorized Modification Label PN 4275086

REPAIR PROCEDURE

This repair will reduce the above conditions by installing a revised ESA module to allow a slightly richer fuel mixture during periods of high vacuum and high rpm. ESA module, PN 5233524, also includes all of the prior improvements made to the original ESA module for cold start driveway dieouts and cold sag on acceleration.

FIGURE 1:

1. Replace ESA module with PN 5233524 per the service manual procedure.

2. Type Authorized Modification Label, PN 4275086, as shown in Figure 1 and install near VECI label.
