Windshield Header Exterior Molding and Seal Installation

NOTE:
CLEAN THE ENTIRE AREA THOROUGHLY WITH GREASE AND WAX REMOVER PRIOR TO STARTING THE SEAL INSTALLATION PROCEDURE.

27. Apply one, 2 x 2 in. (50.8 x 50.8 mm) butyl patch provided to each A-pillar corner to seal the A-pillar (See Fig. 5).

28. Cut two, 8 in. (203 mm) pieces of butyl tape provided 1 x 1/16 in. (25.4 x 1.58 mm) and apply it to the pinch weld from the cut edge forward, (both left and right sides of vehicle).

29. Fold the pieces lengthwise around the bend of the header A-pillar from the edge of the pinch welds forward.

30. Attach the two, 6 in. (152 mm) plastic spacing strips provided, (one on each side of vehicle), over the butyl tape on the outboard surface.

31. Lay the header seal in position along the windshield header and install as follows:

A. Position the seal in the corners to insure a balance across the car.

B. When installing the corners of the seal, locate the outer flaps upward on the inside of the seal.

C. Insert the base of the header seal center extrusion into the retainer, working from the center in both outboard directions.

D. Work around the corner to the A-pillar and down the door pinch weld to the bottom of the door opening. Cut the existing door opening seal at the point where the new seal ends and join the two seals using the stuffer from the old header seal. Use 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive (08011) to join the ends of the two seals together.

32. Raise the top and latch it. Apply 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive (08011) on the mating sides of the seal forward flange and header (Fig 6), allow to dry until tacky (approx. 60 seconds). Keep the adhesive inside the outboard edge and inner flap. Secure the seal forward flange to the roof while ensuring a consistent gap between the seal and the No. 1 bow.

33. Install the 1 x 1/16 in. (5.4 x 1.58 mm) butyl tape provided along the forward flange of the header seal (Fig. 7).

NOTE:
LEAVE THE PAPER BACKING ON THE TAPE AT THIS TIME. THE TAPE WIDTH OVERLAPS THE FORWARD EDGE OF THE FLANGE SECURING IT TO THE HEADER SURFACE.

34. Punch holes through the header seal from the underside for the stud openings. Use an awl or pointed tool.

NOTE:
CAREFULLY ROLL OUT THE FORWARD EDGE OF THE TAPE TO FLATTEN IT USING A ROLLER OR THE HANDLE OF A SCREWDRIVER AND THEN REMOVE THE PAPER BACKING FROM THE TAPE.

35. Unlatch and raise the top off the header.

NOTE:
HEADER SEAL ATTACHING TABS MUST REMAIN LOOSE UNTIL STEP 70.

36. Install the exterior header molding clips to the exterior molding using the alignment marks to position correctly (Fig. 8).

NOTE:
THE SHORTER STUD MUST BE PLACED IN THE CENTER OF THE HEADER. THE THIN EDGE OF THE INTERIOR MOLDING CLIPS ARE INSTALLED TO THE FRONT.

37. Attach the header exterior molding isolator to the exterior molding by hooking the edge of the isolator under the forward edge of the exterior molding. Center the clips within the notches on the isolator. Attach the isolator a foot at a time and tape the seal to temporarily hold it in place as it is installed (Fig. 9).

NOTE:
TO INSTALL THE ISOLATOR, GRASP THE ISOLATOR WITH THE THUMB AND FOREFINGER. SQUEEZE THE OUTSIDE EDGES OF THE ISOLATOR TOGETHER SPREADING THE TABS APART ON THE CHANNEL.

38. Apply clear silicone to the base of each exterior molding stud.

39. Carefully remove the tape and install the exterior molding to the header.

A. Install the header corner seal using 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive (08011). It may require trimming as shown (Fig. 7).

B. Install the header exterior molding aftaching nuts provided in the package.

CAUTION:
DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE ATTACHING NUTS, DIMPLING OF THE MOLDING MAY RESULT. TIGHTEN ATTACHING NUTS UNTIL SNUG.
