Malfunction Indicator Lamp Operation

In 1997, and early 96 non-Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) equipped NS body, the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminates whenever any DTCs which affect vehicle emissions are stored. Though these DTCs will be stored in the TCM immediately, it may take up to five minutes of accumulated trouble code confirmation to illuminate the MIL. Three consecutive successful OBDII trips or clearing DTCs with the DRB III, or equivalent scan tool, is required to extinguish the MIL.
