NO.: 05-02-93
GROUP: Brakes
DATE: Jan. 13, 1993

SUBJECT:
"Modulator Fault" Repair Procedure Bendix 6 ABS System

MODELS:

1991-92 (AA) Spirit/Acclaim/LeBaron Sedan
(AG) Daytona
(AJ) LeBaron Coupe/LeBaron Convertible

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Intermittent or constant "yellow" Anti-Lock lamp illuminated and a "Modulator Fault" is indicated by the DRB II (Scan Tool). This fault will be electrical in nature. It is set when there is an open or short circuit in any of the six solenoid valves, an error in the CAB (Controller - Anti-Lock Brake) command, an open or shorted vehicle wiring harness, and spread or pushed out terminals within the vehicle harness connectors (CAB and hydraulic connectors).

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

PRIOR TO REPLACING EITHER THE MODULATOR OR CAB (CONTROLLER ANTILOCK BRAKE) ASSEMBLIES, PERFORM THE FOLLOWING DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES USING THE 1993 BENDIX ANTILOCK-6 BRAKE SYSTEM, CHASSIS DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES MANUAL # 81-699-0321.

NOTE:
Any time a connector is disconnected, it must be inspected thoroughly to determine that it is in proper condition. Each fault is created by an error in the respective circuit. IMPROPERLY SEATED CONNECTORS AND DAMAGED OR PUSHED OUT TERMINALS CAN CREATE THESE ERROR MESSAGES.

1. Disconnect the modulator assembly unit 10-way connector and inspect for spread or pushed out terminals, corrosion, or broken wires. Repair as necessary with the following repair packages:

- 4419582, "Pkg - .045" Terminal Wire" (Use P/N 4400110 Terminal for a gauge)
- 4419583, "Pkg - .090" Terminal Wire" (Use P/N 4368163 Terminal for a gauge)
- 4504267, "Pkg - Insulator

2. Check the CAB signal starting with Diagnostic Test 12A and proceed to Test 12H as necessary in the 1993 BENDIX ANTILOCK-6 BRAKE SYSTEM, CHASSIS

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES MANUAL # 81-699-0321. This test is used to verify that the CAB is sending a signal to the appropriate valve.

3. If the Diagnostic Test Procedure leads to Test 12H and the CAB 60-way connector requires repair, use the following repair packages:

- 4419479, "Pkg - 60-Way Electronic Controller Wiring"
- 4419494, "Pkg - Insulator"

NOTE:
RESISTANCE MEASUREMENTS PERFORMED IN TEST 12H MUST BE DONE WHEN THE VALVES ARE COOL (AMBIENT TEMPERATURE). A WARM SOLENOID VALVE WILL HAVE A HIGHER RESISTANCE AND MAY RESULT IN AN INCORRECT DIAGNOSIS.

4. Reconnect all connectors.
- Erase all faults.
- Turn ignition on and allow system to self check for 45 seconds.
- Road test the vehicle for a minimum of 5 minutes at 30 mph.
- Perform several anti-lock braking stops.

5. Check for any fault codes. If the "modulator fault" re-occurs, replace the CAB.
