Plugged or restricted carburetor booster air bleeds will cause the carburetor to run excessively rich. To service, inspect and clean the booster air bleeds.
A loose or mislocated air cleaner, a missing gasket, or a dirty air filter may also be causal factors.

Figure 18:

To determine if the carburetor has air bleed type booster assemblies:

^ Open the choke plate (1/2) from the closed position.
^ With a penlite directed down the venturis at 45~ angle look forward toward the fuel bowl area. The booster bleeds (2 brass plugs) located on top of the booster towers will now be visible (Figure 18).
Prior to any service for the above concerns spray carburetor cleaner using a spray wand directly on the air bleeds. Spray liberally and let soak for several minutes. A spray of shop air (at low pressure) may be helpful when cleaning. If the carburetor venturi area appears dirty, several applications may be necessary.
