Drive Belt: Service and Repair

Automatic Tension

1. Install suitable 5/16 inch closed end wrench on tensioner pulley bolt, then lift tensioner arm away from belt. Do not use socket and ratchet.
2. Remove belt, slowly release tensioner. Do not allow tensioner to snap back, as damage may result.
3. Reverse procedure to install.

Manual Tension

1. Loosen accessory adjustment bolt and pivot bolt.
2. Remove belt.
3. Reverse procedure to install, adjust belt tension as follows:
a. Using suitable belt tension gauge, loosen adjustment bolts.
b. Tighten pivot bolt enough to remove free play from pivot area.
c. Place adjustable wrench on top lug of alternator and rotate alternator until belt is tighten to proper tension.
d. Tighten adjustment bolt to specifications.
e. Tighten pivot bolt to specifications.
f. Check and readjust belt, as required.
g. Start engine and allow to idle for at least five minutes.
h. Recheck tension and adjust as required.
