ISSUE: A "chirping" noise from the accessory drive belt that is more noticeable at idle may be caused by a power steering pump pulley that is out of alignment. The misaligned pulley causes the accessory drive belt to "chirp" as it enters into the crankshaft pulley from the power steering pulley.
ACTION: Align the power steering pump pulley using the following service procedure.

1. On Econolines with 5.0L EFI and 5.8L EFI engines and F-Series vehicles equipped with 5.8L EFI engines, remove the remote air cleaner, fan, fan clutch and radiator shroud. Resecure the water pump pulley.

2. Clean the accessory drive belt with mild soap and water to wash away belt dressing or other contaminants.

NOTE: DO NOT SAND THE EDGES OF THE DRIVE BELT OR APPLY LUBRICANTS OR DRESSINGS. THESE ARE ONLY TEMPORARY FIXES.

CAUTION: DAMAGED ACCESSORY DRIVE BELTS SHOULD BE REPLACED BEFORE PROCEEDING TO STEP 3. USE A 16 MM CLOSED END WRENCH TO LIFT THE BELT TENSIONER TO AVOID POSSIBLE DAMAGE. A WEDGED SCREWDRIVER WILL CRACK THE PULLEY OR CRACK THE HOUSING.

3. The initial position of the power steering pump pulley should be flush +/- .010" for 1988 vehicles built after 9/01/87 with power steering pump date codes of 7HC26 and later. The initial position for vehicles built before 9/02/87 should be .020" of overpress +/- .010" for F-Series/Bronco and flush +/- .010" for Econolines.

4. Using Rotunda tools T69L-10300-B (puller) and T65P-3A733-C (installer) set the power steering pump pulley to the applicable specification in Step 3.

5. Operate the engine at idle for five (5) minutes to see if "chirping" noise has been corrected. If not proceed to Step 6.
6. Select a direction and move the power steering pump pulley at .020" INCREMENTS in that direction. After each move (increment), remove the tool and operate the engine for five (5) minutes: if "chirp" fades, alignment is being achieved; if "chirp" increases reverse the alignment direction.

7. Reinstall the fan shroud, fan clutch, fan and remote air cleaner.

8. Make sure the drive belt tension is to specification by using the Rotunda Tension Gauge 021-00019.

Small frame alternators 90 lbs. +/- 13 lbs.
Large frame alternators 130 lbs. +/- 19 lbs.

If the belt tension is not within specification, install a new automatic belt tensioner.

NOTE: ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT CHIRP NOT CORRECTED BY THIS PROCEDURE MAY BE CAUSED BY A DAMAGED PULLEY OR BENT ACCESSORY SHAFTS. STEADY PULSATION OF THE BELT TENSIONER PULLEY INDICATES THIS CONDITION. OBSERVE EACH PULLEY IN THE SYSTEM FOR RUNOUT.
