S

SELF-TEST - A part of the functional "Quick Test" diagnostic procedure which verifies that sensors and actuators are connected and operating properly. Key On/Engine Off and Engine Running detect hard faults while the ongoing "continuous" test stores intermittent fuel for later retrieval.

SELF-TEST INPUT (STI) - The circuit in EEC systems which is used to initiate Self-Test. (In EEC-IV, Jumper Pin 5 of the Self-Test connector to the single spaded gray connector.)

SELF-TEST OUTPUT (STO) - The circuit in the processor which transmits the Service Code to either a VOM or STAR tester for display.

SEPARATOR ASSEMBLYFUEL VACUUM - SA - FV

SEPARATOR PULSES - A pulsed code consisting of a single one-half second pulse between the last Service Code and the first continuous code of Self-Test.
SERVICE CODES - A series of two-digit numbers representing the results of Self-Test. The EEC-IV communicates this service information via the Self-Test Output Connector as a series of timed pulses read either on a VOM or a STAR tester.

SHED (Sealed Housing Evaporative Determination System) - See EESS.

SIGNAL CONDITIONER - SC

SIGNAL RETURN LINE (SIG, RTN or SRTN)
- A return line for all sensor signals except EGO and CP

SILENCER EXHAUST AIR SUPPLY - SILN

SILICONE CAPACETANCE ABSOLUTE PRESSURE SENSOR (SCAP) - Replaces the BMAP sensor in EEC-IV systems. Performs the same functions as a BMAP sensor but sends information according to frequency which can be read by the EEC-IV module. BMAP sensors are analog devices.

SMOG - Air pollution created by the reaction of nitrogen oxides to sunlight.

SOLENOID VALVE CARBURETOR BOWL VENT - SV-CBV

SOLENOID VENT VALVE (SVV) - Energized by ignition switch to control fuel vapor flow to canister. Ignition off opens valve.

SPACER ENTRY EGR SYSTEM - Exhaust gases are routed directly from exhaust manifold through stainless steel tube to carburetor base.

SPARK DECELERATION VALVE (SDV) - A valve that operates on engine vacuum to advance the spark, or ignition timing during engine deceleration. Also called "spark decel valve."
SPARK DELAY VALVE (SDV) - A valve that operates spark vacuum advance during rapid acceleration from idle or from speeds below 15 miles per hour, and to cut off spark advance immediately on deceleration. Has an internal sintered orifice to slow air in one direction, a check valve for free airflow in opposite direction and a filter.

SPARK OUTPUT (Spout) - The output signal from the processor which triggers the TFI-IV Module to fire the ignition coil.

SPEED DROOP - Engine speed variation from no load to full load.

STAR TESTER (STAR) - An automatic readout device which displays Self-Test Service Code and Continuous Codes in digital format. This tester connects to the EED-IV's Self-Test output connector. STAR stands for Self-Test Automatic Readout.

STOICHIOMETRIC - Chemically correct. An air/fuel mixture is considered stoichiometric when it is neither too rich nor too lean; stoichiometric ratio is 14:6 parts of air for every part of fuel.
