ISSUE: A "squealing" noise from the accessory drive belt may be caused by a seized thermactor air pump. The pump may seize if water gets inside it through the corrugated paper tube routed from the intake filter.

ACTION: Modify a new corrugated paper tube by reducing its length by 9" before installation. This will reduce the possibility of water entry into the intake fitter. Also install a new thermactor air pump and accessory drive belt if required. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Determine if the thermactor air pump has seized as follows:

^ Rotate the pulley on the air pump. If it turns freely, continue.

^ Check the airflow at the air pump outlet. If the airflow increases as the engine speed increases, the air pump is okay. Proceed to Step 3. If the air pump is seized, proceed to Step 2.

2. Replace the thermactor air pump if it has seized. Refer to the 1988/89 Light Truck Shop Manual, Volume B, Section 21 for service details. Refer to the following Thermactor Air Pump Application Chart for correct parts usage.
3. Inspect the thermactor air pump drive belt for signs of wear.

4. Replace the belt if it is worn or frayed. Refer to the 1988/89 Light Truck Shop Manual, Volume B, Section 27-06 for service details. Refer to the Dealer Master Parts Catalog for correct parts usage.

5. Install a new corrugated paper tube on the air intake filter. Cut the paper tube nine (9) inches from the filter and throw away the excess piece, Figure 1.
