The following pages provide information which must be used in both determining the actual cause of customer concerns and performing the appropriate service procedures.

VERIFICATION OF CONDITION

The following procedure must be used when verifying customer concerns for E40D transmission.

^ Required Equipment

- Star or Super Star Tester
- E40D Test Harness
- OHM meter
- Manual Lever Position Sensor Tester
- Gear position sensor adjuster

^ Determine customer concerns relative to truck usage

- Hot or cold truck operating temperature
- Hot or cold ambient temperatures
- Type of terrain
- Truck loaded/unloaded
- City/Highway driving


^ Fluid level and condition check


^ Road test truck to verify customer concern.


NOTE: INSPECT TRUCK FOR NON-FORD APPROVED ADD ON DEVICES SUCH AS:
^ AIR CONDITIONING
^ ENGINE TURBOS
^ CELLULAR TELEPHONES
^ CRUISE CONTROLS
^ CB RADIOS
^ LINEAR BOOSTERS
^ BACK UP ALARM SIGNALS
^ COMPUTERS (ESPECIALLY ^ AMBULANCE TRUCKS) THESE ITEMS, IF NOT INSTALLED PROPERLY WILL AFFECT PROCESSOR OR TRANSMISSION FUNCTION. PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO ADD ON WIRING SPLICES OR ABNORMAL TIRE SIZE.

After road test, with the truck warm and before disturbing any connectors, perform the quick test using Star Tester (007-00017) or Super Star II Tester (007-00041). Refer to Section 14 of the Engine/Emissions Diagnosis Shop Manual.
