^ TRANSMISSION - E40D - "CLUNK" NOISE WHEN MOVING THE TRANSMISSION SELECTOR LEVER TO ENGAGE TRANSMISSION RANGES

LIGHT TRUCK:
1989-93 BRONCO, ECONOLINE, F-150-350 SERIES

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to correct the dealer coding basic part number.

ISSUE:
A "clunk" (metallic ring) may be heard when moving the transmission selector lever to engage the transmission ranges. This noise is most noticeable when ...

^ moving the transmission selector lever from REVERSE to DRIVE or from DRIVE to REVERSE.

^ performing low speed manual 2-1 downshifts and manual 1-2 upshifts.

The "clunk" noise may be caused by excessive clearance between the spline teeth on the park gear and the output shaft.

ACTION:
Apply "Loctite 290-21" Adhesive to all of the mating splines connecting the Park Gear to the Output Shaft. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

CAUTION:
USE ONLY THE LOCTITE 290-21 AND LOCTITE 764-06 PRIMER "N". SUBSTITUTION OF ANY OTHER LOCTITE PRODUCT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY.

1. Place the transmission in Neutral.

2. Remove the driveshaft and extension housing. Refer to 1992 Econoline, F-150-350, Bronco Service Manual, Section 07-01A, for the removal procedure.

3. Pull the output shaft rearward and push the parking gear toward the case to maximize the clearance between the gear face and the shaft shoulder, Figure 1.

4. Apply generous amounts of Loctite Primer 764-06 (Primer "N") to all the mating splines connecting the Park Gear and Output Shaft, Figure 2.

a. Rotate the Output Shaft during application to ensure that Loctite Primer 764-06 (Primer "N") is applied to all splines.

b. Allow five (5) minutes to dry.

5. Generously apply Loctite 290-21 Adhesive (290) to all of the mating splines connecting the Park Gear and Output Shaft, Figure 2. Rotate the Output Shaft during application to ensure that Loctite 290-21 (290) Adhesive is applied to all splines.

6. Push the Output Shaft in toward the case, Figure 3.

a. Wipe Off excess Loctite 290.

b. Allow Loctite 290 one (1) hour minimum to "set-up" before reassembling.

NOTE:
ALLOW ONE (1) HOUR "SET-UP" TIME BEFORE DISTURBING OR REASSEMBLING THESE PARTS TO ENSURE EFFECTIVENESS OF THIS PROCEDURE.

7. Install the extension housing and driveshaft. Refer to 1992 Econoline, F-150-350, Bronco Service Manual, Section 07-01A, for the installation procedure.

8. Allow Loctite 290 to cure completely overnight (minimum of 15 hours) before driving.
