Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Inspection Procedures

1. When an aftermarket auxiliary transmission cooler has been installed on the vehicle:

a. Check that the transmission cooler has been installed properly.

b. Inspect the cooler line routing to be sure there are no kinks or restrictions.

WARNING: ONLY FORD AUXILIARY TRANSMISSION COOLERS ARE RECOMMENDED FOR AFTERMARKET INSTALLATIONS. OTHER AFTERMARKET COOLERS MAY RESTRICT TRANSMISSION FLUID FLOW. REFER TO SECTION "AUXILIARY TRANSMISSION COOLERS" IN THIS TSB FOR DETAILS.

2. When servicing a failed transmission, the cooler lines, intank cooler and auxiliary cooler must be thoroughly flushed before the transmission is re-installed to prevent contamination of the cooling system. Contamination may restrict transmission fluid flow or re-enter the transmission causing a repeat failure.

3. Check the hose routing of the heater bypass system to be sure that there are no kinks or restrictions and that the system is updated to the latest level. Refer to Figures 1 through 4 for the proper hose routing for 7.3L and 7.5L applications. Proper routing of the heater bypass system is essential to promote transmission fluid flow through the transmission cooling system during cold weather operation.
