All of these problems can be caused by a short or open of the RPM sensor. The sensor can be checked with a DMM. Set the DMM to measure frequency (Hz). The frequency should rise with engine RPM In this particular case, the frequency will be equal to engine RPM.

Example: Idle in Drive = 550-600 Hz.

Stall in Drive = 1600 - 1700 Hz.

If sensor is faulty, replace it with part number E5TZ-17B384-A.

NOTE:
It is best to use a break-out box for this rather than piercing the wires.
