Overview of Program 91B97

TO: All Ford Dealers May, 1991

SUBJECT:
Owner Notification Program 9lB97 - 1990/1991 F-Series and Econoline 7.3L Diesel Fuel Injection Pump Lever (FIPL) Sensor

CARES/OASIS - Yes
OWNER LIST - Yes
PARTS RETURN - No
PROGRAM TIMING - EXTENDED COVERAGE - (FIPL Sensor) THROUGH APRIL 30, 1992

AFFECTED VEHICLES
Certain 1990 and 1991 F-Series and Econolines built from 1990 model year Job # 1 through October 14, 1990 with 7.3L Diesel engines and E40D transmissions.

REASONS FOR THIS PROGRAM
The engine mounted Fuel Injection Pump Lever (FIPL) sensor may prematurely wear out causing an erratic output signal to be sent to the E40D. An erratic output signal may cause improper E40D transmission operation. Erratic output signals have resulted in undue transmission service for both torque converter replacement and internal clutch failures.

To correct the cause of erratic output signals, dealers are to:

^ replace the FIPL sensor.
^ inspect the transmission fluid for a burnt odor or for friction material/metal particles.
^ replace the torque converter if necessary.
^ if needed, call Sharonville Transmission Plant for instructions (513) 782-7371.

REFUNDS
Only for dealer or owner-paid FIPL or E40D repairs made before date of Owner Letter.
