STEERING COLUMN WHILE TURNING

LIGHT TRUCK:
1992-1999 ECONOLINE

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to add a symptom and artwork, and to expand model years.

ISSUE
Some vehicles may exhibit a "squeaking" or "moaning" noise coming from the steering column while turning the steering wheel. This may be caused by a rubber seal around the steering column (Figure 1) not being fully seated.

ACTION
Reseat the rubber seal around the steering column. Reseating the seal will move the seal away from the column, reducing the possibility of noise. Refer to the following text for details.

NOTE
LUBRICATION OF THE BOOT WITHOUT PROPERLY PLACING THE CENTER RING IS ONLY A TEMPORARY REPAIR. THE CONDITION WILL RETURN.

Push down on the seal in the area around the shaft from inside the vehicle. From the interior of the vehicle, place fingers on both sides of the center ring of the steering boot (Figure 2). Push center ring down until the flexible portions of the steering boot on the bulkhead show no signs of bulge or fold.
