This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include FEAD bracket replacement in the labor time descriptions. The FEAD bracket was inadvertently omitted from the descriptions, although included in the labor times.

ISSUE:
Front End Accessory Drive (FEAD) belt breakage and belt noise may come from the air conditioner compressor area, whether or not the A/C is on. These conditions are caused by the A/C pulley being out of alignment due to unequal length of compressor mounting bosses.

ACTION:
Measure the length of the mounting bosses. If they are unequal, replace the A/C compressor, the FEAD bracket and the FEAD belt. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

INSPECTIONS

1. Perform the following two (2) inspections of the compressor.

a. Place a straight edge on either the front or rear mounting boss, Figure 1.

b. Position it so that it extends to the other mounting boss.

c. If the straight edge hits the other mounting boss, or shows a gap between the mounting boss and the straight edge, verify the condition by performing the following inspection.

d. Measure the length of the compressor front mounting boss, closest to the pulley, as indicated in Figure 2.

e. Measure the rear compressor mounting boss. The two mounting bosses should be of equal length.

2. If it is confirmed that the bosses are of unequal length, replace the A/C compressor, the FEAD bracket and the FEAD belt. Refer to the appropriate Service Manual for service details. Refer to the Dealer Master Parts Catalog for the correct A/C compressor and the following A/C Compressor Bracket And Belt Chart for correct FEAD bracket and FEAD belt usage.
