Base Ignition Timing Check

CHECK BASE TIMING
- Key "OFF".
- Transmission in "PARK" or "NEUTRAL".
- Turn off electrical loads (A/C, heater, etc.).
- Disconnect the in-line Spark Output (SPOUT) connector.
- Start engine.
- Check base timing.

- Is timing within ± 2 degrees of specification displayed on the underhood Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) decal?

Yes -- Go to VERIFY PCM CONTROL OF TIMING.

No -- Adjust timing to specification and rerun Key On Engine OFF self-test. Key On Engine Off (KOEO) Self Test

NOTES
- Base timing is 10 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) if not specified on VECI decal.

- If engine stalls, reconnect SPOUT connector and go to Pinpoint Test Step S2. S2 - Check For RPM Drop


- If engine is now a No Start (will not fire at all), reconnect SPOUT connector and go to Ignition System/Testing and Inspection.


VERIFY PCM CONTROL OF TIMING
- In-line SPOUT connector disconnected.
- Start engine and let idle.
- Reconnect the in-line SPOUT.

- Does the timing change from base timing when the SPOUT connector is reconnected?

Yes -- Go to Key On Engine Running (KOER) self-test. Key ON Engine Running (KOER) Self-Test


No -- Go to KOER self-test. Key ON Engine Running (KOER) Self-Test


While performing the KOER self-test check for Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 213. IF KOER code 213 is present disregard all other codes and diagnose DTC 213 first.
