Crankshaft Main Bearing Cap Torque Sequence

Windsor engine (5.4L)





NOTE: To aid in assembly, apply petroleum jelly to the back of the crankshaft thrust washer.

NOTE: The oil groove on the thrust washer must face toward the rear of the engine (crankshaft surface).

On Windsor engines, install the lower crankshaft thrust washer to the back side of the No. 5 main bearing cap, with oil grooves facing the crankshaft surface.
On Romeo engines, install the rear main bearing cap.

NOTE: Rotate the jack screws into the bearing caps enough to provide clearance to the cylinder block prior to installing the bearing caps.





Romeo engine (4.6L)

All engines





Install the crankshaft lower main bearings into the main bearing caps. Locate the main bearing cap on the cylinder block and tap into place using a plastic or dead-blow hammer.

Romeo engine (4.6L)





Install the vertical main bearing cap fasteners and tighten in the sequence shown.
^ Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten an additional 85 - 95 degrees.





Tighten the jack screws against the cylinder block in the sequence shown.
^ Tighten to 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.).
^ Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).





Install the side bolts and tighten them in the sequence shown.

Windsor engine (5.4L)





Install the dowel pins so the flat sides face the crankshaft.





Install the vertical main bearing cap fasteners and tighten in the sequence shown.
^ Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten an additional 85 - 95 degrees.





Install the side bolts and tighten them in the sequence shown.
^ Tighten to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten an additional 85 - 95 degrees.
