Axle Assembly -Dana Models 60 and 70





Materials
Removal and Installation
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the rear tire and wheel assemblies.
3. Release the tension on the parking brake cables.





4. Remove the bolt.





5. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake. Repeat for the opposite side. Position the cables aside.





6. Disconnect the Anti-Lock Brake Sensor (RABS) connector. Position the harness aside.





7. Disconnect the axle vent tube.





8. Remove the axle vent.





9. Remove the bolt.





10. Remove the bolt.





11. Remove the bolts retaining the anchor plate to the axle. Position the rear brake caliper aside. Repeat for the opposite side.
^ Use mechanics wire to position the rear brake calipers out of the way.





12. Position the brake tube, harness and cable out of the way.





13. CAUTION: Index-mark the rear axle pinion flange (4851) and the driveshaft flange yoke.

Remove the four bolts.





14. CAUTION: The driveshaft flange yoke fits tightly on the rear axle pinion flange pilot. Never hammer on the driveshaft or any of its components to disconnect the yoke from the flange. Pry only in the area shown, with a suitable tool, to disconnect the yoke from the flange.

Using a suitable tool as shown, disconnect the driveshaft flange yoke from the rear axle pinion flange and position the driveshaft aside.





15. Remove the nut and bolt retaining shock absorber to the axle. Repeat for the opposite side.




16. CAUTION: Support the front of the axle. Do not let the front of the axle swing downward.

Support the axle.





17. Remove the nuts and the axle U-bolts.
18. Raise the vehicle.

19. CAUTION: While watching for obstructions, lower the hoist until the spring positioning pins contact the axle housing pad. While adjusting the hoist as necessary, have an assistant align the spring positioning pins to the axle pads.

CAUTION: Install the driveshaft with new bolts. If new bolts are not available, apply threadlock to the threads of the original bolts.

CAUTION: Align the index marks.

CAUTION: The driveshaft flange yoke fits tightly on the rear axle pinion flange pilot. To make sure that the yoke seats squarely on the flange, tighten the bolts evenly in a cross pattern as shown.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.
