CERTAIN 2008 F-250 THROUGH F-550 SUPERDUTY VEHICLES EQUIPPED
WITH DRIVER SEAT LUMBAR - FRONT DRIVER SEAT BACK INSPECTION
AND REPAIR

OVERVIEW

This program involves inspecting the front driver seat back inboard pivot bracket welds on vehicles equipped with driver seat lumbar, and installing a clamp kit.

INSPECTION

1. Move the driver seat and seat back to the full forward position.

2. On regular cab vehicles only, remove the latch handle on the back of the seat using a clean, suitable tool. See Figure 1.

3. Open the J-clip on the seat back using a flat-blade screwdriver. See Figure 2.

4. Roll the seat back trim upward, while unseating the hook-and-loop strips by hand, to the first row of hog rings. Do not go past the first row of hog rings. See Figure 3.

5. Pull the foam and seat back trim assembly up over the seat back frame to remove. See Figure 4.

NOTICE:
The silk film bag will be reused, use care not to tear the silk film bag during removal. The purpose of the silk film bag is to provide a barrier between the foam and seat back to prevent squeaks.

6. Carefully remove the silk film bag from the seat back frame. See Figure 5.

7. Inspect the welds on the driver side seat back frame inboard pivot bracket for cracks. See Figure 6 for weld locations.

^ If cracks are found in the welds, Service Management must call the Special Service Support Center (SSSC) to request a Front Driver Seat Back Kit.

^ If no cracks are found in the welds, proceed to the Clamp Installation Service Procedure.

CLAMP INSTALLATION SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Install the clamp on the driver seat back frame so that the clamp is located above the ridge on the inboard pivot bracket. Insure that the clamp nuts point inward toward the lumbar support to avoid cushion damage. See Figure 7 for the correct location/orientation.

2. Tighten the 2 clamp nuts to 15 Nm (133 lb-in) so that an equal amount of threads are exposed on both sides. See Figure 8.

3. Install the protective caps on the exposed threads. See Figure 9.

NOTICE:
Use care not to tear the silk film bag during installation. The purpose of the silk film bag is to provide a barrier between the foam and seat back to prevent squeaks.

4. Carefully install the silk film bag onto the driver seat back frame.

5. Slide the foam and seat back trim assembly over the seat back frame, making sure the trim assembly is fully seated on the frame and headrest pan. Take care not to damage the foam when sliding the foam over the clamp. See Figure 10.

6. Pull down the seat back trim while seating the hook-and-loop strips by hand.

7. Connect the J-clip on the seat back.

8. On regular cab vehicles only, install the latch handle on the back of the seat.

FRONT DRIVER SEAT BACK FRAME REPLACEMENT
INSTRUCTION SHEET

1. Using needle-nose pliers or a 7/16-in (11 mm) socket pressed onto the retainer clip, carefully release the 4 retainer clips that hold the lumbar assembly in place. Lay the lumbar assembly on the front seat cushion. The lumbar retainer clips are reused during installation. Two extra lumbar retainer clips are provided in the kit, only to replace clips that may break during removal. See Figure 1.

2. Install a fender cover over the steering wheel to prevent the seat back from resting directly on the steering wheel.

3. Remove the 2 recliner-to-seat back bolts. See Figure 2.

4. Using a pry bar or screwdriver, release the inboard side of the seat back off the pivot of the cushion pan. See Figure 3.

5. Install the new pivot bushing into the new seat back. See Figure 4.

NOTE:
Make sure that the lumbar cable is positioned behind the cushion pan pivot.

6. Install the new seat back on the inboard pivot of the cushion pan, making sure the seat back is fully seated on the pivot pin. See Figure 5.

7. Install 2 new recliner-to-seat back bolts and tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft).

8. Reinstall the lumbar support to the seat back, making sure the retainer clips are fully seated and that the lumbar cable is routed correctly in front of the seat back. See Figure 6.

9. Carefully install the supplied new silk film bag onto the seat back.

10. Slide the seat back foam and seat back trim assembly over the seat back frame, making sure the trim assembly is fully seated on the seat back frame and headrest pan. See Figure 7.

11. Pull down the seat back trim while seating the hook-and-loop strips by hand.

12. Connect the J-clip on the seat back.

13. On regular cab vehicles only, install the latch handle on the back of the seat.
