Transmission - Gasoline Engines





Removal

All vehicles

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.

2. Disconnect the battery.

3. Remove the exhaust pipe between the exhaust manifolds and the exhaust flange.

Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles

4. Remove the transfer case assembly.

Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles

5. Remove the driveshaft.

All vehicles

6. NOTE: If transmission disassembly is required, drain the transmission fluid.

Remove the transmission fluid pan drain plug and allow the transmission fluid to drain.





7. Install the transmission fluid pan drain plug.
- Tighten to 18 Nm (159 lb-in).





8. Install a suitable high-lift transmission jack.

9. Remove the transmission support crossmember.

10. Remove the transmission insulator and retainer extension housing bolts from the extension housing and remove the transmission insulator and retainer.





11. Remove the fuel line bracket nut and remove the fuel line bracket.





12. NOTE: To prevent selector lever cable damage, do not apply force to the selector lever cable assembly between the manual control lever and the selector lever cable bracket.

Remove the selector lever cable.

1. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the manual control lever.

2. Remove the selector lever cable bracket bolts and position the selector lever cable and bracket aside.





13. Loosen the bolt and disconnect the transmission vehicle harness connector.





14. Disconnect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor.





15. Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS)/intermediate shaft speed sensor.





16. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

Disconnect the RH and LH wire harness from the side of the transmission.





17. Remove the flexplate inspection cover.

1. Remove the flexplate inspection cover bolts.

2. Remove the flexplate inspection cover.





18. While holding the case fitting, remove the rear transmission fluid cooler tube.





19. While holding the case fitting, remove the front transmission fluid cooler tube.





20. If equipped with dual generators, rotate the tensioner and remove the outer accessory drive belt from the crankshaft pulley.





21. Remove the cylinder block opening cover in order to gain access to the torque converter-to-flexplate nuts.





22. Remove the starter motor.

23. Remove the steering damper-to-frame bolt and nut, and position the steering damper aside.





24. Using a suitable tool, rotate the crankshaft pulley to gain access to the torque converter-to-flexplate nuts.





25. Remove and discard the 6 torque converter-to-flexplate nuts.





26. Remove the 9 transmission-to-engine mounting bolts.





27. Slide the transmission back enough to install the Torque Converter Retainer.





28. Carefully lower the transmission assembly.

29. Remove and discard the transmission fluid filler tube O-ring.





30. If the transmission is being overhauled or if installing a new or remanufactured transmission, carry out the Transmission Fluid Cooler Backflushing and Cleaning procedure. 31. For vehicles equipped with a Power Take-Off (PTO) assembly, prior to installing the transmission, the PTO assembly must be flushed and cleaned to remove any foreign material. Failure to remove foreign material from the PTO assembly may result in subsequent transmission concerns.
