Removal
Transmission - Gasoline Engines
All vehicles
1. Pull the shift lever boot upward to access the shift housing.
2. Loosen the upper gearshift lever bolt, then remove the upper gearshift lever.
3. Remove the 2 screws and the lower shift lever boot.
4. Remove the 4 shift housing bolts and the shift housing.
Vehicles with a manual shift transfer case
5. Shift the transfer case into 4H.
6. Remove the 2 screws that attach the bezel and boot assembly to the floor.
7. Slide the bezel and boot up the shift lever. Remove the bolt that attaches the shift lever to the transfer case control lever assembly, and remove the shift lever and the bezel and boot assembly.
All vehicles
8. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
9. If the transmission is being disassembled, drain the transmission fluid.
10. Remove the exhaust Y-pipe.
11. Remove the starter.
12. Remove the skid plate, if equipped.
13. Remove the transfer case, if equipped.
14. NOTE: Index-mark the driveshaft to the flange. Remove and discard the driveshaft bolts.
Disconnect the rear driveshaft and position it aside.
15. Disconnect the fuel tubes from the transmission.
16. Remove any Power Take-Off (PTO) equipment, if equipped.
17. Using the Transmission Jack, support the transmission.
- Securely strap the Transmission Jack to the transmission.
18. Remove the 4 RH crossmember nuts.
19. Remove the 3 LH crossmember bolts.
20. Remove the 2 transmission mount nuts and the crossmember.
21. Disconnect the reverse lamp switch electrical connector.
22. Disconnect the wiring harness from the transmission.
23. Remove the clutch slave cylinder and position it aside.
- Push the clutch slave cylinder inward, then rotate counterclockwise 45 degrees to remove.
24. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes.
25. Remove the 2 dust cover bolts.
26. Remove the 7 transmission-to-engine bolts.
27. Remove the transmission.
- Move the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the clutch, then lower from the vehicle.
