Exterior Mirror Glass - Trailer Tow





Removal

NOTE: LH trailer tow mirror shown, RH trailer tow mirror similar.

NOTE: The service repair kit for the exterior mirror glass includes new jack pins and sealing boots. When installing a new mirror glass assembly, do not install new jack pins and sealing boots unless the original ones are worn or damaged.

All exterior mirrors

1. Position the exterior mirror glass in the full up position.

Power exterior mirrors only

2. NOTICE: Avoid damaging the jack pins and sealing boots while removing the mirror glass.

Using a trim panel removal tool or equivalent notched tool, carefully disengage the 2 jack pin balls from their sockets in the glass assembly back, leaving the jack pins and sealing boots attached to the mirror motor.

3. WARNING: Place a shop towel between the hands and the exterior mirror glass for protection in case of glass breakage during mirror service. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

Grasp the outside bottom edge of the mirror glass and carefully remove it from the mirror housing.





Installation

Power exterior mirrors (worn or damaged jack pins and sealing boots only)

1. Remove the sealing boots from the exterior mirror motor.





2. Install the jack pins in the sealing boots.





3. Install the jack pins and sealing boots.
- Hold the legs of the jack pins and push the jack pins back into the exterior mirror housing.

- Install the sealing boots so the shoulder of the sealing boot is under the mirror collar.
- Using a 1/8-inch flat-blade screwdriver, tuck the shoulder of the sealing boot under the mirror collar by starting at one point, and move around the perimeter of the shoulder of the sealing boot until the shoulder is in place.

4. Position the tabs on the edges of the jack pin balls so they align with the key slots in the sockets on the back of the mirror glass assembly.
- Rotate the tab on the upper jack pin ball so that it is in the vertical position (pointing up).

- Rotate the tab on the lower jack pin ball so that it is in the horizontal position (pointing left/right), and facing away from the vehicle.

5. Place the new exterior mirror glass assembly, with the glass side down, on a smooth firm surface.

6. NOTICE: Do not overheat the exterior mirror glass backing plate. Heat only until the backing plate is warm to the touch (approximately 10 seconds).

Using the Heat Gun, warm the main pivot and jack pin sockets in the exterior mirror glass backing plate.

7. Loosely install the glass.

1. Starting with the bottom 2 friction pins, position the friction pins in their openings in the mirror housing.

2. Align the locating tabs, on the jack pin balls, with the slots in the sockets on the back of the mirror glass assembly.

8. WARNING: Place a shop towel between the hands and the exterior mirror glass for protection in case of glass breakage during mirror service. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

Using a flat hand, press on the center of the mirror glass until seated on the center pivot of the mirror housing.

- Seat the side jack pin (vertical facing tab) by carefully pressing the left center edge of the mirror glass into the mirror case, so that the side jack pin ball snaps into the socket.

- Seat the bottom jack pin (horizontal facing tab) by carefully pressing the bottom center edge of the mirror glass into the mirror case, so that the bottom jack pin ball snaps into the socket.

NOTE: If the jack pins do not engage, they may not be aligned correctly. Remove the exterior mirror glass, align the jack pins to the slots in the sockets and repeat the installation procedure.

9. WARNING: Place a shop towel between the hands and the exterior mirror glass for protection in case of glass breakage during mirror service. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

NOTE: The jack pin should click while manually adjusting the exterior mirror glass.

Tilt the exterior mirror glass to the full OUTBOARD position and then press on the outer side of the glass until the upper jack pin snaps into the socket on the exterior mirror backing plate.

10. WARNING: Place a shop towel between the hands and the exterior mirror glass for protection in case of glass breakage during mirror service. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

NOTE: The jack pin should click while manually adjusting the exterior mirror glass.

Tilt the exterior mirror glass to the full down position and then press on the bottom edge of the mirror glass until the lower jack pin snaps into the socket on the exterior mirror backing plate.
